SNBS launched the commencement of the MICS-7 Survey in a high-level event unveiled by H.E. Salah Ahmed Jama, Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia. The hybrid event brought together Federal & Federal Member State Ministers, including the Minister of Planning & the Minister of Labor, senior government officials, representatives from UN, World Bank, UNICEF, WHO, civil society, academia & the media.

In his opening Address, the Deputy Prime Minister stressed the centrality of data for national transformation: “If a Somali child is healthy & educated, s/he embodies human capital—the true wealth of a nation. MICS-7 will provide the indicators needed to craft Somalia’s National Human Capital Development Strategy.” He further called on all relevant ministries to ensure that the data generated from the survey is used for prudent & requisite policy interventions that directly improve the lives of Somali citizens.

SNBS Director General, Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed, underlined the importance of the survey for policymaking: “Without credible data, policy remains guesswork; with it, policy becomes precision. MICS-7 is a collective investment in knowledge, accountability & shared future of every Somali child, woman & family.” He further noted the survey will cover 17 of the 18 pre-war regions.

Delivering the closing remarks, H.E. Mohamud Abdirahman Sheikh Farah (Beenebene), Minister of Planning Investment & Economic Dev. reaffirmed government ownership of the process, noting, “this survey marks a new chapter in evidence-based policy. It will guide our efforts to build a resilient, equitable & prosperous Somalia.”

SNBS extends deep appreciation to development partners—World Bank, UNICEF & WHO—for their technical partnership & support in making this landmark survey possible. With 168 indicators & 47 SDG measures, the majority focused on human capital, MICS-7 signals a new era for Somalia’s data-driven development. @AbdisalamHumbul @abdirahm_omar

In line with its mandate on mapping, GIS & national geospatial coordination, Somalia outlined key priorities including geo-referenced sampling, climate resilience mapping, national boundary harmonization & GIS integration.

Today, SNBS had the pleasure of hosting a high-level delegation from @iom_somalia, led by Chief of Mission Mr. Manuel M. Pereira. The meeting, chaired by SNBS Director General Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed, focused on strengthening collaboration around migration & displacement data systems in Somalia.

Discussions underscored IOM’s partnership with SNBS in establishing the National Technical Working Group on Migration & Displacement Data and producing Somalia’s first migration statistics report. Both sides agreed on the need for joint planning & coordination in IDP data collection to ensure accuracy, national ownership & policy relevance.

Key outcomes include piloting Disaster Displacement Indicators, co-presenting Somalia’s migration statistics at the International Migration Forum & deepening SNBS involvement in IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix. The Bureau appreciates its continued partnership with @iom_somalia in advancing reliable data for evidence-based decision-making. @AbdisalamHumbul @abdirahm_omar

The leadership of Somalia National Bureau of Statistics, led by Director General Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed & Deputy DG Abdirahman Omar Dahir, convened a general staff meeting today at SNBS Headquarters in Mogadishu. The DG outlined key institutional achievements & presented upcoming priorities for the Bureau.

The meeting featured an open Q\&A session, where staff engaged directly with leadership—raising questions, sharing valuable views to enhance performance. Dr. Abdisalam commended the dedication, professionalism & teamwork demonstrated among departments, calling the staff the engine behind SNBS's progress.

The leadership welcomed the constructive contributions from staff & affirmed their commitment to incorporating feedback into institutional reforms. A Historic Milestone for Somalia!
SNBS launches three groundbreaking statistical achievements: District-Level Poverty Estimates, Phase II of the Somalia Statistics Project and Somalia’s first harmonized National Consumer Price Index (CPI).

The high-level event was attended by the Minister of Planning, Minister of Labour and SNBS DG. Also in attendance were Federal State Minister for Fisheries & Blue Economy, Galmudug Planning Minister, World Bank Task Team Leader, SNBS departmental directors, other government officials, UN Agencies (FAO, UNFPA), academia, private sector and media.

These tools mark a major leap in Somalia’s journey toward evidence-based policy, poverty reduction, and economic transformation, aligned with the National Transformation Plan (NTP 2025–2029) and Vision 2060.

Somalia–IMF Policy Discussions kick off in Nairobi as part of the ECF review. SNBS DG Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed, @AbdisalamHumbul joined high-level 🇸🇴 delegation led by Finance Minister H.E. @BihiEgeh, alongside @AbdirahmanM_A, Governor of @CentralBankSo among other senior Government officials.

SNBS played a central role by presenting key macroeconomic indicators—including GDP by expenditure (private consumption, investment, govt spending, net exports), Consumer Price Index, public spending trends and data on trade & climate vulnerability—to inform policy dialogue.

As discussions progress, SNBS will continue to make statistical interventions to influence sound decision-making through trusted, timely statistics—providing evidence on economic outlook, inflation, social protection & the impact of aid dynamics. @abdirahm_omar #DataForDevelopment

SNBS, in collaboration with the Eastern Africa Statistical Training Centre (EASTC), concludes three concurrent statistical training courses aimed at strengthening the Somalia National Statistical System (NSS). The closing ceremony was presided over by SNBS Deputy Director General, @abdirahm_omar. These capacity-building courses encompassed key areas in Statistical Foundations & Data Privacy, National Accounts and Financial Accounting & Internal Audit.

Strengthening Statistical Foundations & Data Privacy course equipped participants with essential statistical principles, data management techniques and best practices in data privacy. It included training in Excel, STATA, Power BI for data analysis as well as the use of Kobo Toolbox for data collection. Key aspects of data anonymization and sharing were also covered to uphold ethical practices in data confidentiality.

The training on National Accounts was designed to provide Somalia’s National Statistics Office staff with a deeper understanding of GDP measurement, the System of National Accounts (SNA) and economic data compilation. Through the application of real-world Somali data, the course sought to enhance national economic planning and policy formulation.

The Financial Accounting & Internal Audit course involved financial management, auditing principles, donor fund management and budget preparation for public sector institutions. Participants gained practical insights into financial accountability and governance to improve the management of national statistics.

The Director General of the Somalia National Bureau of Statistics, Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed @AbdisalamHumbul, has today unveiled three concurrent capacity-building programs in partnership with the Eastern Africa Statistical Training Centre (EASTC). These initiatives bring together participants from SNBS and 11 federal government ministries, departments and agencies to enhance their expertise in statistics and financial management.

The National Accounts Program trains participants on GDP compilation using the production approach. The program covers the development of annual and quarterly GDP estimates in both current and constant prices, including GDP at constant prices in volume terms, vital for comprehensive economic analysis.

The Financial Accounting, Financial Management and Internal Audit Program equips participants with essential skills in financial reporting, budgeting, public financial management and internal auditing. This initiative aims to bolster institutional statistical skills.

The Statistical Foundations Program focuses on building technical proficiency in data collection (using KoboToolbox/ODK), data management and analysis (with Excel/STATA). Participants also receive training in creating dashboards and visualizations using Excel and Power BI, empowering them with modern tools for effective decision-making.

Speaking at the launches, Dr. Abdisalam underscored the significance of these programs in enhancing the skills of SNBS staff and other government stakeholders. He highlighted how mastering statistical software and working with complex datasets will strengthen decision-making and support Somalia’s development agenda. @abdirahm_omar
