Here’s something subtle about narcissistic audience management: they perform differently for different people in the same room.
The narcissist has an internal hierarchy of who matters. Who sees them most favorably. Who gets the best version of the performance. And they adjust accordingly.
This is why you might see a narcissist be charming to one person and cold to you. Both in the same moment. Both in the same room.
They’re not being inconsistent. They’re managing multiple audiences.
The person they’re charming to is either:
- Someone who believes the image strongly (needs reinforcement)
- Someone new (who needs to be converted to a believer)
- Someone with power or status (who can enhance the image)
- Someone who’s wavering (who needs to be pulled back in)
You might be getting coldness because:
-You’re no longer useful
- You’re no longer believed
- You’re a threat to the image
- You’re not an audience the narcissist needs to impress
So the narcissist isn’t actually interacting with you as a person. They’re managing you as part of a system.
And the system has a hierarchy. Some audience members matter more than others.
That’s why narcissists often have a favorite. Someone who gets special treatment. Someone who believes most strongly. Someone who’s most useful.
And everyone else is managed according to how useful they are to the image.
Watch a narcissist at a party:
- They’re most charming to people of status
- They’re most attentive to people who are wavering
- They’re dismissive to people who’ve already bought the image
- They’re cold to people who might expose them
It’s all calculated. All part of the audience management.
And the most painful part for people close to the narcissist:
You might have been the favorite audience member once. You might have received the best version of the performance. But as you started to see through the image, you dropped in the hierarchy.
Now you’re getting the leftover performance. The parts designed to keep you compliant but not impressed.
Because you’re no longer part of the primary audience. You’re just an obstacle.
Here’s what’s observable:
The narcissist has an internal ranking of people based on how useful they are to the image. And they perform accordingly. And those rankings shift based on usefulness.
Understanding this helps explain why you might get different treatment than someone else. It’s not random. It’s systematic. You’ve fallen in the hierarchy because you’re less useful to the image.
get you a partner that doesn’t mind hurting people’s feelings when it comes to you. let me say it again GET YOU A PARTNER THAT DOESN’T MIND HURTING PEOPLE’S FEELINGS WHEN IT COMES TO YOU.
Her name is Sonia Meena.
She is a young officer, still in the early years of her career. She seized the trucks of one of the most feared mining mafias in her state. In return, she got a death threat. She kept going to court to give evidence against him anyway.
She came from Rajasthan, cleared the civil services examination in her early twenties, and was posted into the Madhya Pradesh cadre.
She was handed the kind of postings that break people, districts where the sand and mining mafia runs a parallel government, where trucks strip the riverbeds through the night and everyone, from the local strongman to the officials meant to stop him, has quietly agreed to look away.
She did not look away.
As a sub divisional magistrate, she went after the illegal sand mining directly. She impounded the loaded trucks of a powerful mining operator, a man used to being untouchable.
She did not accept the usual arrangement where the raid happens, the fine is paid, and the trucks quietly return to the river the next night.
So the threats began. The mafia boss she had taken on was reported to have threatened her openly. A formal death threat followed, serious enough that the state had to increase her security.
Here is the part that tells you who she is. Even under threat, she kept travelling to the other district to submit her evidence in court, in person, so the case against him would not collapse. The easy thing was to fall ill, to be busy, to let the file go cold. She refused.
She is not a famous name. She has no film about her. She is simply one of those officers who took the oath seriously, in a system that often punishes exactly that.
They thought a young woman in her first postings would be easy to frighten. They were wrong.
When a man has no desire to change, he’ll go looking for a woman who’s willing to accept the version of him that refuses to grow. That’s why he’ll walk away from a woman with standards, boundaries, and self-respect. Holding him accountable feels like pressure because he was never planning to do better in the first place. So don’t question your worth when he leaves. You weren’t asking for too much you were asking the wrong man. A woman who knows her value will always be too much for a man who’s committed to staying the same.
Narcissists Are Extremely Immature. They have tantrums and fits like children. They can't control their anger, and don't like not getting their way. They have little communication or social skills. They play games, and punish people, when they don't get what they want from them.
Narcissistic Individuals never matured past a certain point in childhood, and in some ways still function at the level of a small child. Many Narcissists are emotionally stunted individuals.
It’s HARD to exercise with depression, because even if it will help, IT TAKES ENERGY. Energy is hard to come by when you’re depressed.
People aren’t being difficult. They’re trying to muster even .01% of our being towards action.
Stay kind. XO, Dr. Jen
