I'm really proud of this work published today in Proc B with @SmithBeeLab & @ben_koger on the importance of the 3D nest structure and building strategies in developing honeybee colonies https://t.co/fAVEUUw83B
We observe, manipulate, and model 3D nest construction - see below.
Excited to announce the 1st publication from @midge_ryan10, on UK raspberry pollinaton. In experiments over 3 years, she showed that 68% of marketable fruit set depends on pollination; this dependence can vary a lot depending on how & when you measure it https://t.co/lR9FVYlkHm
@JtdFinch I used micro capillaries to sample the nectar and get volume then HPLC analysis of the nectar to get the ratios of sucrose : glucose : fructose.
A four-year study of feral/wild #honeybee colonies in German forests showed that they are not self-sustaining. The estimated lifespan of feral colonies was 0.6 years, and the survival rate just 10.6%. (#Varroa is likely to take a large toll.) https://t.co/6H1Zv0OKwj
My 4 weeks in the US at the University of Maryland sampling disease and environmental VOCs of honey bee colonies for my PhD @KeeleUniversity are nearly up.
A big thank you to everyone who's helped and made the trip possible. It's been a blast!
Help! How can I bring live beetle larvae from the US to the UK? BA says they can't go in the cabin, and the cargo people say they're not pets so they won't take them. If I put them in my luggage the cold / xrays will kill them. There must be a way? (I have the licences I need).
My boy recently started an apprenticeship @Corgi_Socks and I'm super proud of him. Pride went off the scale today when he bought me home some amazing insect socks! Take note all my entomology friends!
