Why do people add indexes to tables?

At first it was one or two misguided DBAs, now it’s spreading like a disease.

It makes no sense. You are making writes slower, and everyone hates you while the index is being built.

Why not just do a full table scan every time?

@jamesacowling @convex Also, creating new partitions during writes means data plane has a hard dependency on control plane, which makes it very difficult to achieve static stability for data plane during control plane outages?

The missing piece is extracting all the domain knowledge from people’s heads and providing that as structured context to the models.

@utkusen Abi bu aklina bile gelmesin. AWS’te İngilizcesi bildiğin kotu, temel seyleri bile surekli yanlis ve akiciliktan cok uzak sekilde soyleyen bir L10 (Distinguished Engineer) ile calisma firsatim olmustu ornegin. Baska seylerde herkesten iyi olunca bu konuda harika olmak gerekmiyor.

@blackie_just 15y later you also wouldn’t do some of the mistakes you did while younger. Same principle as why the youngest athletes often don’t perform the best. There’s a better balance between “athleticism” and “wisdom about the game”.

@kalanoros Asil fark su: Turk insani luks yasamayi bir gereklilik olarak gorup, her ay tum parasini sacma sapan harcamayi yuksek standart saniyor. Sonucta herkes surekli fakir kaliyor. TR’de herkes bunu boyle yaptigi icin sen yapmayinca fakir hissediyorsun. Avrupa’da ise boyle degil.
