Yesterday, I shared the first part of my thoughts on what I believe is a growing problem in our midst---the tribalism we are seeing from our relatives in Southern, North Western, and Western Provinces.

The piece drew sharp responses, the majority of them from my Tonga friends and colleagues, invariably. I was surprised by none of it, I understand the culture and mentality of my people very well. I have spent a lot of time with and around them. Here is my follow-up piece, in which I attempt to respond to some of the replies I got.

The first and most expected is that I only say these things because I'm bitter. Bitter, my people's favorite word. What did they say I'm bitter about? Well, for one thing, that I will not be benefitting from all the glorious things that come with being at the seat of power, in or around the corridors of influence; the jobs, contracts, access etc. That's the first instance. The other was that I am bitter because my candidate of choice did not win the election and didn't particularly perform well. Normally, this would not be worth responding to, but in the interest of the discussion, an exception will be made this time.

I have no interest in becoming Councilor, Mayor, MP, Minister, Ambassador, or any of those things. I have no desire to enter active politics primarily because I lack the disposition for it in this environment. To contracts, I can see that it may be imagined that because one is in business, they must necessarily want to feed at government's trough, seeing as it is the biggest buyer of goods and services. I have never sought or pursued government contracts. I have zero knowledge of how our public procurement or tendering system works. What little I have and will ultimately accumulate has come from the sweat of my brow with much heartache and pain, but above all, the unwavering support and goodwill of my wonderful customers. I'm also not as deathly afraid of being without as many people seem to be. I wasn't born into wealth. In fact, it is wealth that is abnormal to me, not the reverse. If everything I am working for and towards ultimately fails, I will return to familiar ground; the humble beginnings from which I rose. Nothing about that is particularly scary. There's nothing more to say here.

To my preferred candidate in this election, I first met Dr. Fred M'membe a few years ago. He and his wonderful wife Mutinta were gracious enough to invite me into their private residence for an extended chat. On that initial meeting, we had a long conversation, some 6 hours, on a range of subjects. I would not see or interact with him for another 3 years. We met again just before the elections. He did not come looking for me, I sought him out. I was interested in some of his ideas and wanted to chat with him at length again to learn and exchange thoughts. Again, he made time for me and invited me to his house. We had another long chat. I came away from that meeting more appreciative of what he is trying to do with his time in politics, his driving philosophy, aims, and motivations. I then offered to lend myself to his campaign in what little way I could, which he graciously accepted. The election went how it went for him, and that's a discussion for another day. Fred M'membe will not be the first political candidate I support, nor will he be the last. In 2011, I backed and voted a Social Democrat for President of this country. My political education and consciousness did not begin yesterday. Supporting a political candidate does not mean agreeing with everything they say or do. Dr. M'membe is as far left as they come. I sit somewhere in the centre of the ideological spectrum and disagree with lots of his views on the political economy, among other things.

Treason charges are becoming a political weapon against opposition leaders across Africa.

In country after country, opposition figures are arrested, prosecuted or threatened with treason charges after challenging those in power.

African governments must respect political freedoms, due process and the right of citizens to organise and challenge those who govern them.
