Robinson makes a very interesting point- both "fake" news and "real" news don't exist; the truth is objective. It's really making me look at mass media in a new light (and Trump supporters in general). #comm106
The speed of the media today, as Schwartz mentions, could be seen in the false nuclear warning that was sent out in Hawaii a few months ago. The news was fake, but it seemed real because of the lack of info and the rapid movement of it across the country #comm106
@spencerhkendall I agree- while both Trump and FDR didn't get along with the newspaper organizations themselves, at least FDR was respectful to reporters (something that Trump has difficulty doing). #comm106
@SammyJo38054903 I know it's silly, but your experience makes me think of this meme. It's crazy how well these people do their jobs that we don't even realize they're just like all the other actors we see on screen(s). #comm106
I'm currently reading an essay by M. Balaji about empathy vs pity during the Haiti earthquake, and while it makes many good points, I think the biggest take-away is how empathy works differently when the situation is really happening / the characters aren't fictional. #comm106
@gloribeldifo@VtranCommClass It's interesting how we empathize more with cute creatures like pikachu and puppies than with fellow human beings. Every time a dog dies in a movie I'll cry, but it takes a lot of work for a human death to earn that same reaction. I wonder why that is? #comm106
One of my favorite sitcoms of all time is The Middle, which follows a fairly poor family that is made up of a authoritative father and bumbling mother - it's interesting how unlike other shows this is, and I wonder if this stray from the norm is why it's so overlooked #comm106
I feel like the transformation of Bill Cosby from the ideal father to who he is seen as today is a good representation of the breakdown of the patriarchal stance that old sitcoms used to take. Both Cosby and the idea of dads ruling the house are now far from the ideal. #comm106
I just have to say how much I enjoyed watching The Celluloid Closet- it was so interesting to see how those older films both supported and went against Mulvey's claims. The Marlene Dietrich example was particularly cool, as it showed both sides at once. #comm106
Since so many films (even during early cinema) are based on novels, I wonder if books then also follow these forms that Mulvey talks about. Certainly women are often objectified love interests in novels, but is is different since it's through text? #comm106
@kevsandy98 The second model is the Cultural Model - "a web of meaning is developed by the media and then people develop their own beliefs/viewpoints based on this web according to how they live their life." This involves information distribution, legitimacy, and presentation biases.
Michael Schudson says that "since Theodore Roosevelt, presidents have given a great deal of time and thought to how their actions will play in the newspaper" ....should someone let @realDonaldTrump know he's doing it wrong? #comm106
It's interesting how "the cable had reunited the British and American peoples" and would hopefully "result in world peace" (83). This is kind of the exact opposite of the idea of nationalism, so I'm wondering where the division between the two is made? #comm106
@timr100 I think it's telling about the quality of discussion that Twitter has consistently had something about the shooting trending while Facebook doesn't. The different social medias definitely have different purposes, and Twitter may be the most political of the bunch. #Comm106
@Camillecomm@VtranCommClass I think there's more to it than just autonomy. Many sites can achieve it, especially places where users are anonymous and can speak without fear of repercussions. I think it is a lack of a combination of the five pieces that makes an online public sphere impossible #Comm106
"Thus morally condemning the woman whose nakedness you had depicted for your own pleasure" -Berger. Women today are still criticized by men for any image that is remotely sexual, but men are the ones who wanted these pictures. Leaked celeb nudes face this all the time. #comm106
Feeling #blessed that Jesus supports my introverted tendencies of not talking to people directly. Next time I put my headphones in without listening to music I'll be thinking of him #Comm106
