BREKAING: China now accounts for ~28% of global manufacturing, more than any other country or economic bloc.

This percentage has more than tripled since 2004.

By comparison, US factories account for ~17% of global manufacturing value added, or 11 percentage points less than China.

In 2004, the US proportion stood at ~22%, more than double China's.

Meanwhile, the Eurozone economy represents ~15% of world manufacturing, while Japan accounts for just ~5%.

The EAC Monetary Affairs Committee has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating the implementation of the East African Monetary Union (#EAMU) roadmap and strengthening regional financial integration during its 29th Ordinary Meeting held in Kampala, Uganda.

The Committee noted the resilience of the regional economy, with EAC growth projected at 5.2% in 2026, outperforming the Sub-Saharan Africa average of 4.3%, while inflation has eased to 6.7% from 9.6% in the previous financial year.

Members reviewed progress towards establishing a single East African currency by 2031, calling for stronger macroeconomic convergence, enhanced peer review mechanisms, and closer policy coordination among Partner States.

The meeting also advanced implementation of the EAC Cross-Border Payment System Masterplan, which will facilitate faster, more secure and affordable cross-border payments, improve interoperability, promote financial inclusion and boost intra-EAC trade.

Chairperson of the Committee and Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, reiterated that achieving the East African Monetary Union requires sustained commitment, stronger regional institutions and accelerated implementation of agreed reforms.

EAC DSG, Ms. Annette Ssemuwemba, @SMannette1 called for sustained partnership, consensus and shared responsibility among Partner States to accelerate the East African Monetary Union agenda, deepen regional integration and create more opportunities for the people of East Africa.

Held discussions with East African Community Secretary-General Stephen Mbundi at State House Nairobi. We deliberated on the progress the EAC is making, including increased integration among Partner States, regional trade and free movement of people.

As Africa's most progressive regional bloc, intra-trade in the EAC is about 20 per cent yet it can be scaled up to 50 per cent with the necessary strategic interventions.

We extend our sincere appreciation to H.E. Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia, for graciously receiving the Heads of Tax Administrations from across Africa at the State House during the just-concluded 7th ATAF Heads of Tax Administrations Master Class.

In his remarks, His Excellency underscored that domestic revenue mobilisation is the bedrock of the state’s ability to provide for its people. He shared about his constant monitoring of the GRA and how the revenues collected have solely paid for an increase in public service salaries and constructed roads in The Gambia. When Africa collects its own revenues effectively, Africa finances its own development. That this message came directly from a Head of State, addressed to those charged with collecting the continent’s revenues, is precisely what gave the moment its weight. As the Executive Secretary, Ms. Mary Baine, noted, “It is not every day that those who collect Africa’s revenues are welcomed as a collective by a Head of State, and the gesture speaks louder than any communiqué.”

We are deeply grateful to His Excellency, the Government, and the people of The Gambia for their warm hospitality and for championing the vital role of domestic revenue mobilisation in advancing Africa’s development agenda. Together, we continue to strengthen the partnership between Africa’s political leadership and those working to finance the continent’s future.
