NW #Syria in a state of catastrophe after 7.8 magnitude #earthquake. Destruction, devastation, and collapse of buildings. Hundreds of injuries, dozens of deaths, many trapped under the rubble or stranded in the winter cold. We call on the international community to take action.
🧵1/12 #BorisJohnson & #PritiPatel will today announce their plans to send people seeking asylum in the UK to #offshoredetention camps in #Rwanda, to try & deter #refugees from seeking protection in the UK. Cruelty is the point of this policy. Here's why this will fail...
'At the heart of this crisis, we have to remember they are humans. People like you, like me, like your viewers.'
Syrian refugee and filmmaker @hassan_akkad says the government uses refugees as a scapegoat and distraction from other issues.
'UNHCR remains firmly opposed to arrangements that seek to transfer refugees and asylum seekers to third countries in the absence of sufficient safeguards and standards.'
UNHCR urges UK to refrain from transferring asylum seekers and refugees to Rwanda.

The agreement that will be announced today means that #LGBTQI+ people who have fled life-threatening situations and sought safety here will instead be sent to a country where it is not safe to be LGBTQI+.

We're working alongside @action_storm to help more people take tell Boris Johnson and Priti Patel that they oppose their cruel, ineffective and costly plan to send #refugees to #offshoredetention in #Rwanda.
You can even take both actions!

Despite the fact that Syrian women have been severely affected by the war, they have carried the burden of supporting their families, raising children, and providing a decent life. We salute them. They are the guarantors of our future.

Home Office are deliberately misleading the public & press. Many of the ppl due to be deported on #Jamaica50 are NOT FOREIGN national offenders; they have been here since childhood. Most have only committed minor crimes. And all have already served their sentences. This is cruel.
