@DaphnePfoser #CD7 @psyc220 This is a good point to bring up! Not having equal representation in research hurts both the people not being represented and the applicability of the research to diverse populations. Making the research field more inclusive would bring a lot of benefits.
@psyc220 #CD7 One of my goals in the future is to become a psychiatrist. A problem within this field is the tendency for doctors to see women's symptoms as less severe or that she's dramatizing how bad she feels. If I were to go into the field, I would make sure to not let (1/2)
@DrewFromPsyc220 @psyc220 #CD7 @psyc220 This is a really good point! Even beyond the music industry, there seems to be a narrative of people not being held accountable for their actions if they're rich and famous enough.
@psyc220 #CD6 This extra obstacle for women to get people to listen to their pains makes it harder for them to get diagnosed or properly treated, leading to painful consequences. Here is an article I found on the subject. https://t.co/yyIG9oSvvq
@psyc220 #CD6 one example is ableism and gender, specifically women trying to get treatment for their conditions. It has been reported that women have a difficult time getting doctors to take their pain seriously, being labeled dramatic or other things to dismiss their pain. 1/2
@maddie_leckert @psyc220 #CD6 @psyc220 I agree! And when broken down between the different races of women, the wage gap gets even worse. It's frustrating to see this issue continue to be brought to light only for it to be ignored and never resolved.
@olivianedd7800 @psyc220 @psyc220 #CD6 This is a good point to bring up! It's unfair and unethical that so many life altering or saving treatments are withheld from people because they don't have the money to afford it. Access to proper healthcare should be universal and affordable.
@psyc220 #CD5b One way JMU creates barriers is by not having ASL interpreters at events. I have never seen one at any JMU event, which instantly creates a barrier for the deaf community. On JMU's website, they say they 'recommend' hiring an interpreter but by not requiring it
@sydpsyc@carolineglovis1 @psyc220 It is! My high school and our class did so much with the deaf community, especially our last year because our teacher was deaf. The culture within the community is amazing to see and learn about and its upsetting that JMU doesn't attempt to include it in their education.
@murphyrcPSYC220 @psyc220 #CD5b @psyc220 I agree! There doesn't seem to be many options for those immunocompromised who don't want to be on campus. Not allowing this access and potentially forcing those people into dangerous and unhealthy situations is unfair and something the university should address.
@jesszoggpsych @psyc220 #CD5b @psyc220 I agree! The tone of a lot of inspiration porn is actually pretty condescending, putting down those they claim to try to be inspiring. In the ad, they should have focused on the fact that she was a good athlete instead of making her identity her disability.
@egglestonsk23 @psyc220 @psyc220 #CD5a This is a good point! Every single house in my complex has steps leading up to it and I haven't seen any houses here with a ramp. Most off campus housing I've seen requires steps, which really narrows down housing options for people needing wheelchair access.
health care is seen as for profit when it should be focused on helping those in need. Allowing more and more people to get access and at a less cost will help people who suffer from disabilities get the treatment they need without it costing them so much.
@psyc220 #CD5a Princess Blanding was running in the Virginia election under the Liberation party. One thing she focused on on her campaign was increasing the number of free and income based medical facilities. This would help those struggling with disabilities as far too often
@psyc220 #CD4 solidarity. This solidarity should be built between everyone, not just those who are oppressed, as having an understanding of the struggles people face is essential to both getting people to recognize there is a problem as well as fight to change it.
@psyc220 #CD4 Feminism has changed over recent years as the movement attempts to become more inclusive and end oppression for all. Developing an understanding for the oppression people face and actually acknowledging there is a problem and not ignoring it is essential to building
@samipsych @psyc220 @psyc220 #CD4 I hadn't really thought about how feminism can help end toxic masculinity, but you're right! By erasing the message that men are superior and implementing more feminist ideas of equality, toxic gender norms would no longer be something people felt pressure to follow
