@AversionReality thanks so much! I ask because I get some discrepancy between the viewport preview and the 'baked' custom normals, which maybe is a drawback of the mesh? The viewport preview is often preferable to what I can get in render, either with baked mesh or material solution

Question: would blender 4.5 allow the modifier to set the normals of the mesh directly? I really love the featureset, but would love to use it without needing to 'bake' the normals down
