Safety Features

To prevent people from losing money we are taking two measures you haven’t seen before:

1) There is a 5 block (~1 min) “cooldown period” between an ethscription’s last transfer and when it can be listed for sale or transferred again.

2) If our indexer is behind by more than 1 block the marketplace will pause until the indexer catches up.

Why is this necessary? Ethscriptions are 40x cheaper than NFTs because they don’t use expensive smart contract storage.

Unfortunately, this means that ethscription marketplace contracts cannot know which ethscriptions they own and whether they are “transferring” ethscriptions they don't own.

Because of this you cannot ever buy or sell from an ethscriptions marketplace contract directly. You need to pair it with a website and indexer that you trust to report the accurate state of the ethscriptions ecosystem.

This doesn’t have to be our indexer; anyone can make an indexer that does this. In fact, you can manually verify the necessary data directly using Etherscan.

Aside from the minor inconveniences caused by our safety measures, on a day-to-day level you shouldn’t have to worry about any of this. And, practically speaking, you shouldn’t buy or sell traditional NFTs without a trusted website and a trusted indexer, either.

But still this difference is important to keep in mind!

Our marketplace contract is an ERC-1967 proxy contract deployed with Solady’s ERC1967Factory (written by the immortal @optimizoor).

This means that you can deploy your own clone for extremely low gas if you want to start your own ethscriptions marketplace!

The Future

The goal of Ethscriptions is not to replace NFTs. It’s to provide an alternative to NFTs that is 40x cheaper and works just as well in the majority of cases.

Likewise, the goal of Ethscriptions Market is not to replace traditional NFT marketplaces. Its goal is to make digital asset ownership and sale accessible to people who don’t want to pay the premium required to use NFTs.

I believe with this marketplace we have succeeded in this goal and yet it is still just the beginning!

In 2023 all Eth NFTs will be worth $0! Why? It's literally on the Ethereum Roadmap!

The roadmap is to make L2s huge. L2s use L1 blockspace very efficiently. If someone uses blockspace 10,000x more efficiently than you, they can afford to pay 10,000x more.

Imagine if everything you do with Eth NFTs was 10,000x more expensive. What would those NFTs be worth? Not much.

"But using blockspace efficiently is good, right? We can just start over with new NFTs on cheaper L2s!"

Are you sure? L2s are efficient today because they are completely centralized. Maybe L2s figure out how to decentralize and voluntarily do it, but... maybe they don't!

And if they don't we'll all be holding "NFTs" on centralized blockchains run by giant corporations who graciously write the receipts of the transactions they don't to censor to Ethereum.

So in a way I agree with @punk6529—in 2030 NFTs will be powering our Chipotle coupon cards. My concern is that this will happen on a blockchain controlled by Chipotle!

Ethscriptions Update!

We are now over 130k ethscriptions! That's >50% growth in just 13 hours!

The new indexer is working! But to provide more transparency, you can now see the status on the site.

Ideally the indexer should never be behind by more than 1 block.

But if it is, you will know and can decide for yourself whether you want to wait until it catches up, or take your chances and ethscribe anyway!
