Alberta Government Position: Confront Canada. Surrender to Washington.

On Monday, I outlined our position on Canada-U.S. trade. Today, let’s take a look at the contradiction in the Alberta government’s position.

Danielle Smith’s government supported “turning off the taps” and restricting Alberta energy exports to British Columbia.

They also supported restricting B.C. wine imports.

The UCP were prepared to use Alberta’s leverage against fellow Canadians.

Now, with the United States using its full trading power against Canada and threatening Alberta’s economic well-being, this government wants our strongest levers to remain off the table.

They say we can’t risk Alberta jobs and prosperity, but that’s exactly what is already under threat.

You don’t respond to economic intimidation by conceding your bargaining power to the government threatening you.

Which makes the UCP’s stance difficult to comprehend.

Why use Alberta’s economic weight against Canadians, but not against Washington?

It makes no sense if your objective is strengthening Canada’s negotiating position.

Although it makes perfect sense if your long-term objective is separation and you believe you may need Washington on your side.

So, whose interests are the UCP really serving?

“A Sovereign Alberta within a United Canada”?

Their actions suggest confronting Canada while surrendering to Washington.

Alberta’s approach should strengthen Canada’s hand - not weaken it.

Standing up for Alberta shouldn’t mean standing against our own country.

They’ve called for Canada to use - or consider - export taxes on energy and critical minerals that we ship to the USA.

When you’re in a trade war, every bit of leverage matters. We may be smaller than the US, but we have commodities that its economy depends on. We should tax those goods – oil, gas, thermal coal, potash and other minerals to hit Trump where it hurts. Call it playing our trump card.

A majority of Canadians support it. Leaders across party lines are receptive to it. And it will generate billions in new revenue to help workers most impacted by these tariffs.

I’m calling on the Prime Minister to impose export taxes on energy and critical minerals now.
