“Ireland does not need any more mental health awareness. What it needs is better services”. Ireland needs both. And we shouldn’t belittle one for lack of the other. There can never be enough awareness. Awareness saves lives in all areas of health.
This was one of my favourite platforms for many years. Unfortunately, it has become an (increasingly) sinister force in the World. It’s a really terrifying time for information-sharing.
Big transfer of PBP-Solidarity to Soc Dem Eibhlín Seoighthe (34%) in the fifth count #Galwaywest they pushed Cat Connolly (Ind) ahead of Noel Grealish too @CTribune
Over the next 7 weeks, our outgoing committee of 7 are going to increase their engagement in meaningful occupations to them while carrying out their final placement, raising much-needed funds for @UNICEF’s Gaza appeal. Their progress will be documented in this thread 🧵
“Ireland doesn’t just need incremental change, it needs a radical overhaul of public therapeutic services, to a system where services are tangible rights, not privileges for the privileged.”

There shouldn’t be private, profitable services that provide therapy (OT, PT, SLT, etc.) to children with additional needs. The longer the state underfunds public services, the more reliant we become on the private sector. It’s so upsetting to watch unfold.
@revolucienary I also wondered whether it had something to do with the growing popularity of far-right ‘others’ and parties (Aontú, Independent Ireland, Human Dignity Alliance)… whether centre-leftists, who typically wouldn’t have, have given FF/FG a preference?
@Keirwales …Rather, should acknowledge the difficulties the person is experiencing as a result of it, and open them up to support. I’m also disappointed that stigma and discrimination reduction hasn’t worked thus far, but feel this remains an area where our efforts are necessary and valid.
@Keirwales In the same way that someone’s eating can become disordered (and harmful to them) as a result of trauma, someone’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours can too. The diagnosis of an Eating Disorder, or a Personality Disorder, shouldn’t invalidate the person’s trauma…
@Keirwales Do we not then seek to improve the environment for the person, through reducing staff stigma and discrimination, for e.g.? The diagnosis being applied could be framed as a positive personal or environmental factor either, opening the person up to treatments/management pathways?
@Keirwales With BPD, the barrier to accessing treatment free of stigma isn’t the diagnosis, as much as perceptions of the diagnosis. We want people to extend the same amount of sympathy to those suffering with a physical illness as with a psychiatric illness, regardless of its’ ‘cause’, no?
@Keirwales I find the comparing of the two to be a powerful thought exercise. The lung of one patient is harmed (due to pollutant exposure, for e.g.) and the interpersonal relationships of another is harmed (due to trauma, for e.g.). Both patients have the right to treatment free of stigma.
🔴 Gaza:
“The impact of an offensive on Rafah will have disastrous effects for over a million people,” says Aurélie Godard, MSF medical team lead in Gaza.
“Living conditions all over Gaza are already extremely precarious. They will just get worse for people who are being displaced again and will have to live in makeshift tents with extremely limited access to basic necessities such as water... 🧵
