Before I started EVO, I dedicated 8 years of my life to bodybuilding.
Building my physique to extraordinary levels is what gained me 250,000 followers on social media.
I posted 2,000 videos over those years with no success.
From gaining those followers is how I was introduced to Cal Ai.
Cal Ai was my first brand deal ever.
Zach hit me up and said âhow much do you charge?â I replied and said â$1,000 for 1 postâ
At this point, I never made a single penny from content. The reason I said $1,000 is because I thought the guy was a fake, so I said whatever number I thought sounded cool.
He replied âOkay, Iâll talk with team and come backâ
I replied and said âokay coolâ (knowing he wasnât going to come back)
But sure enough, 3 hours later, he said
âHey bro, the team can do $1,500 for 6 postsâ
I said YES, so damn fast.
He called me. We talked for 20 mins, then Jake PayPal me the $1500 and I knew in that very moment that my dream had came true.
I was officially a paid content creator.
"In-house UGC gets us a $2 CPM."
The trap: looking at CPM one-dimensionally instead of total cost.
And I get it. I've been the solo operator who wants to run lean.
If in-house UGC costs $2.00 CPM and partnering with an agency costs $2.75 CPM, the difference at 10MM views is only $7,500.
If running your entire in-house UGC program consumes 100 hrs. per month, your breakeven is $75 per hr.
Do you and your team create more than $75 per hr. of value elsewhere? The answer to this is almost always "yes." If you're a founder and operator writing scripts and issuing payments, the answer is definitely "yes." Often times the $2.00 CPM isn't cheaper. It just hides the cost.
Lower CPM â lower total cost
Two years ago, EVO was making $0.
I had $30K/month coming in from fitness coaching. Stable. Comfortable. The kind of income people tell you not to walk away from.
So I called every client and fired them.
Everyone thought Iâd lost it.
Before EVO existed, I got a $1,500 gig from an app called Cal AI.
Six posts.
It was the most money Iâd ever made from content at the time.
But instead of taking the check and moving on, I got in the room, started recruiting creators, and turned my own videos into a system for driving downloads.
That one gig planted the idea for EVO.
I had no idea I was building a company.
I just kept following the thread.
I brought my brothers in. We bet everything on it. None of us really knew what we were building.
We didnât even know what UGC meant.
We just knew we had to move fast.
No backup plan.
Fast forward to today:
20 people.
All my brothers are executives.
Weâre working with apps and tech companies I never imagined Iâd even be in the room with.
I gave up $30K/month for $0.
Everyone told me it was a mistake.
Best decision I ever made.
Never forget this when running a UGC campaign:
Always prioritize building a following.
When building pages with your creator army, you want people following the creator because they care about the pain point, not just the product.
Take a travel app.
People donât follow because theyâre obsessed with the app. They follow because the creator gives them flight hacks, ways to save money, vacation tips, and secrets they can use on their next trip.
Theyâre following for the value and the secret, not the product.
Thatâs how you build an audience of high intent buyers.
More followers = a built-in audience ready to watch, engage, and help push every new piece of content beyond the creatorâs existing audience.
Donât just build views. Build the audience.
one of my favorite UGC conversion funnels that anyone can take advantage of rn:
âcomment [keyword] and iâll send it to youâ
it has generated us 15.3K+ comments last week.
now ManyChat automatically turns every one of those comments into a DM with the product.
EVO will be in NYC for BOA, Sept 16-18th.
@stripe x @Superwall x @evougc
Looking forward to connecting with more founders and teams building in the app space.
See you at BOA.
One of my employees sent a 4 min voice note today.
Never listening and had to resend. We have a 30 secs or less voice note rule in Evo.
Donât ramble. Make it simple and fast.
Saying 10,000 words is pointless when only 100 of them create actual action.
I barely graduated highschool at 18
had my first kid at 19
homeless at 20
Now I manage UGC campaigns for some of the biggest brands in the world at the highest level with @evougc at 21
all I had was a camera and a dream...
It ainât over till the fat lady sings
After generating billions of views and millions of $$ in revenue for brands with UGC..
here is a tip for youâŚ
BE ORGANIC
The more natural and organic you can be on camera, the better
Iâve seen countless videos that you would have not pushed out on first glance.. bad lighting, stutters, filler words, someone dropping something in the hook
and those popped off and drove real impact
Take a look at these 3 videos below (20M+ TT views combined):
1. laying in bed with her boyfriend + organic screen flip: phone just gets picked up and pressed record, no cuts, feels like a Snapchat to the group chat, not content
2. yap sesh while fixing hair: nothing was planned, and thatâs exactly why it worked
3. looks like she just woke up: yawning, rubbing her eyes, phone propped up like a FaceTime call
Pro tip: Make your content feel like a FaceTime call or sending a Snapchat video to your gc.
No viewer wants to open social media after a long day at work/school and get ads.
But if you come across as a person sharing value/hacks & solve their problem.. that is how you drive conversions.
Recently hit one year at @evougc. And I've been dealing with something lately that I don't really talk about.
I have really high standards, and always have. But I'm starting to realize that sometimes what I call "standards" is really just fear polished. The fear that if I let something be "good enough" I'll get comfortable. Fear that if I actually trust the process, I'll lose control of the outcome.
And when someone pours something back into me, recognition, a compliment, I genuinely don't know what to do with it (I move away from it quick).
You can be obsessed with growth and still be running from something.
This next year I'm leveling up outside of the work. Getting closer to God, being more in tune with myself, and growing in areas I've never really focused on like sales, public speaking, building real human connections instead of just transactions.
All of it flows into the same thing. The best version of me, so I can show up at the highest level for the people around me and the work I care about.
One love â¤ď¸
I wrote thisâ¨
Inspiration: a reel on instagram showing popular flight hacks.
As someone whoâs worked in organic UGC long enough, Iâve realized this one thing:
You either need to entertain or provide value.
Simply mentioning the offer doesnât work well. Itâs not a paid ad.
I included a few hacks that could be applied + the offer at the end and this format has absolutely exploded!
So thankful for the team @evougc for allowing creators to act as strategists when the idea is really good. đ
