We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Denis Galava, who has joined the distinguished faculty at the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications.

Dr. Galava, a seasoned interdisciplinary scholar, brings a wealth of experience to GSMC. His research focuses on the intricate intersections of media, culture, and social transformation.

With a background as the former Managing Editor of Kenya's largest newspapers, The Daily Nation and The Standard, and a global media relations and advocacy director at the African Wildlife Foundation, Dr. Galava's expertise spans journalism, elections, violence, and sustainable journalism.

Currently, Dr. Galava is delving into the realm of political communication, analyzing how political figures leverage digital media to connect with voters and its impact on political and social discourses. His passion for gendered communication is evident in his analyses of the media's portrayal of 'taboo' subjects. Dr. Galava is also exploring the transformative potential of generative AI within newsroom cultures.

Dr. Galava holds a PhD in African Studies from the University of Edinburgh, an MSc in African Studies from the University of Oxford, an MA in Peace Studies from Coventry University, and a B.Ed (Arts) from Kenyatta University
