My view is that modest proprietary periods are extremely important; they give junior researchers a chance to work on the data without being scooped, and also incentivize proposal writing.

@photonhandler For me, they started coming roughly around the end of my PhD, but I think that was a bit on the early end. I don't think I gave very good referee reports initially.

@samayanissanke I've known a few bullying victims as well, tried to help them as much as I can, and I absolutely agree that the courage required is insane. One lesson I learned after leaving academia is that some hills are worth dying on and I regret not doing more.
