Bigger picture: an expert-designed codebook + autoresearch + validity gates + expert oversight point toward a transparent and auditable way to scale theoretically demanding qualitative coding to extract the implicit stances buried in scientific text.
New paper with @tarikkelestemur & @DaglarTanrikulu 🧵 We applied @karpathy's "autoresearch" to qualitative analysis: do scientists treat Bayesian models of the mind as real mechanisms (realism) or just useful math (instrumentalism)? https://t.co/Mz8kJC4UQx
We deployed this across the published Bayesian cognitive science literature. The field leans instrumentalist overall, but papers rarely commit and swing between positions. And subfields differ: low-level (perception/motor) researchers lean more realist than high-level cognition.
It was a real pleasure to be part of this fantastic team!
Grateful to @SchoeneggerPhil for the leadership and collaboration! This paper offers key insights for persuasion research and important implications for AI ethics.
New preprint out with an amazing 40-person team! We find that Claude 3.5 Sonnet outperforms incentivised human persuaders in a >1000-participant live quiz-chat in deceptive and truthful directions!

I am seeking applicants for a fully-funded PhD student position in my lab. The student will join the Cognition track in the Psychology PhD program at UNH. Please spread the word if you know someone who might be interested.
(RTs appreciated)
Thrilled to share our latest findings on data contamination, from my internship at @Google! We trained almost 90 Models on 1B and 8B scales with various contamination types using machine translation as our task and analyze the impact of contamination.

I am pleased to share my acceptance into the PhD program in Psychology at the University of New Hampshire. I'll work with @DaglarTanrikulu in the vision lab, focusing on the philosophy and psychology of vision and perception, using VR for empirical studies.
The University of New Hampshire is coming to @VSSMtg with 3 presentations. Come and check our posters, and say hi! (Or maybe, bring us coffee/water while we present?)

Interested in young children’s understanding of possibility and how they represent the actions (and minds) of others’ in tasks involving mutually exclusive possibilities?
Meet me at Poster P1-137, end of the room, during Poster Session 1 at 1:15. See you there! #CDS2024
📣 Thrilled to share my first first-author publication in Cognition: “Three-year-olds' ability to plan for mutually exclusive future possibilities is limited primarily by their representations of possible plans, not possible events”
