The problem with exercise:
Or any health behaviour for that matter.
We overestimate what a month of exercise can do - but underestimate what a year can do.
That’s why sustainability is key.
Because the reality is:
Even simple approaches work.
But only if you stick with them for long enough.
The biggest difference between you & the elites...
it's not VO2max
it's not threshold
it's metabolic fitness
Typical VO2max of a "weekend warrior" athlete is ~50ml/kg/min. Typical VO2max of an elite endurance athlete is ~70ml/kg/min so about 40% difference.
Typical maximal fat oxidation for a weekend warrior is 3-4kcal/min. Typical for an elite is 7-10kcal/min, so about a 150% difference!
In practice, this means there is a *huge* difference in the relative intensity of the "easy" training that can be sustained for an elite vs an amateur. Much larger than the difference in the "hard" training.
Put another way...
The difference in the volume that can be sustained often comes down to the fact that many amateurs are ignoring just how weak their metabolic fitness currently is!
Age-related declines in muscle, per year:
1. Mass/size = ~0.5-1%
2. Strength = ~1-3%
3. Power = ~3-4%
Size matters, but function (esp. speed) is the bigger concern for aging.

@CharlieXDeFi @MariusCrypt0 ty, I’m trying it! 👍. I liked your poste! In my opinion maintaining health is superior to muscle gains. But I thought Marius poste is about target gains…
@CharlieXDeFi @MariusCrypt0 This episode is not about gains. It’s for maintaining health and longevity. But the thought are very interessting. And I recommend it too!!!
@hubermanlab@DrAndyGalpin Small tip for anyone who wants to assess his power in the Vertical Jump. Low cost alternative to labs and paint on the walls 😉 https://t.co/YF3X55aHay

@julianhosp just keep calm. Do things with him that he enjoys and involves a sense of accomplishment to get dopamine bursts. The other areas of the brain can also develop in this way. my daughter is the complete opposite she runs 10km/h on the treadmill and rides 10km on the balance bike...
