They lost because voters of all stripes judged them to be incompetent and dishonest.

The UK election is the only ray of light amidst the rise of the far-right in Europe and Trump’s looming return. It’s bitter sweet though to think that if the UK was still in the EU, it would now be in the lead. Outside it, I’m happy for my British friends, but not much more.
