The sons of the imprisoned former leader of Pakistan Imran Khan told CNN they fear for their father's health, claiming authorities in the South Asian country are preventing them from seeing him.
Pakistan's government said it "categorically rejects" the claim that Khan has faced a communication blackout or been denied access to his family, lawyers and doctors. Read more: https://t.co/e7nMvqM6XF
Shouldn’t 5th August be marked as
“Imran Khan Day” — to recognise his and his wife’s incarceration and persecution, solely because he challenged the supra-state authority?
Imran Khan has become Pakistan’s foremost symbol of resistance.
Three years in prison. No surrender. No compromise. No public plea for bail. No emotional breakdown. No capitulation. An extraordinary display of resilience.
Whether one agrees with him or not, this level of endurance is extraordinary and has no parallel in Pakistan’s political history.
From behind bars, currently, he is the only lighthouse for those striving for genuine democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law.
Why is his imprisonment unprecedented in Pakistan’s political history?
1Arrested at the age of 72
2His wife, despite never holding public office, has also remained imprisoned for the last 20 months
3Three years in prison without release on bail
4At least 8 consecutive months in solitary confinement
5Denied family visits for 8 months
6Denied access to his lawyers for 8 months
7Facing 300+ cases
8Multiple court orders recognising his legal rights were ignored
9Subjected to jail trials, crushing the due process and fundamental rights
10A designated LFO (legal framework order) through constitutional changes was introduced just to prolong his imprisonment indefinitely
11Amnesty International, UN experts and bodies, human rights organisations, international media, and members of several foreign parliaments have several times admitted his and political victimisation
12Suffering deteriorating eyesight while being denied treatment acceptable to him and his family
13Access to his personal doctors for medical examinations has been denied on multiple occasions
14Despite everything, he has never publicly sought a compromise or pleaded with the authorities for personal relief
Why Imran Khan Day?
The UN observes 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of his lifelong struggle against apartheid, and for democracy, reconciliation, and human rights.
The UN also observes 2 October, Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, as the International Day of Non-Violence.
The United States observes the third Monday of January as Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On the 3rd anniversary of Imran Khan's imprisonment, a key question is whether this move was helpful to the country. #Pakistan has had some foreign policy successes. But are Pakistanis and the country better off than they were 3 years ago? The answer is clearly no. The economy is in unsustainable peril and the government is desperately searching for financial rescue. #Baluchistan is in full insurgency mode. Pakistan-Administered #Kashmir is wracked with violence. The same is true of #KhyberPakhtunkhwa. Even in foreign policy there are setbacks: relations with #Afghanistan and #India are worse. Overall the situation is dire and a re-set is required. And that must include internal reconciliation.
