BANGLADESH 🇧🇩: @amnesty’s Secretary General @AgnesCallamard urges Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to end the ongoing crackdown on protesters and cooperate with the UN to conduct a thorough, effective, independent, and impartial investigation into the deaths and injuries that have resulted from crackdown.

She reiterates that Amnesty’s findings findings point to unlawful use of birdshot against student protesters, dangerous use of tear gas in enclosed student spaces and unrestrained use of lethal firearms, such as AK-pattern assault rifles, by security forces. They also point to violence unleashed by Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL), the student wing of your the ruling party, first against unarmed and peaceful student protesters in the University of Dhaka and then against students receiving medical treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Additionally, the mass arrest and arbitrary detention of student protesters has further perpetuated a climate of fear. All the people detained or arrested solely for exercising their right to protest peacefully must be unconditionally released. #ProtectTheProtest #SaveBangladeshiStudents

6-Day Remand: What Crimes Have Asif Mahtab and Arif Sohel Committed? Is This Fascist Government's Mass Arrest an Attempt to Silence Student Leadership?

Asif Mahtab, a former teacher at BRAC University, has been actively supporting the 2024 quota reform movement, standing in solidarity with students and supporting them morally by joining them in protests. On July 29, he was arrested from his home.

Similarly, Arif Sohel, a key organizer of the anti-discrimination movement at Jahangirnagar University, was picked up on the night of July 28. After being held for nearly 36 hours incommunicado, he was brought to court today and placed on a 6-day remand.

Both individuals have been charged in connection with an attack on the 'Shetu Bhaban', yet on the day of the incident, Arif Sohel was at his university, making these accusations seem questionable & dubious at best. The question looms large: Is this a targeted effort to undermine student leadership in the country?

International human rights organizations, global media, and influential diplomats—please take note of this situation. This is a pattern of arbitrary arrests where individuals are made scapegoats for attacks without any evidence. Arif Sohel was held incommunicado for over 36 hours before being brought to court.

This blatant disregard for due process and human rights must be addressed. We cannot allow such actions to go unchecked; the voices of the oppressed must be heard, and those in power must be held accountable.
