Congratulations to the new CEO of NSPA, Shiruna. She’s the definition of competency. She’s a rare find. Super high quality.

She’s also the one who destroyed Maldives Blood Services and National Thalassemia Centre. Under her watch, the blood bank suffered chronic shortages, critically low stocks, massive blood wastage from damaged filters and the use of units stored in faulty refrigerators. Essential medicines ran short and service quality remained poor. Patients and families protested against her on the night of 22 March 2025 outside MBS, with demonstrators explicitly demanding her resignation.

In May 2025 in a Viber group that included patients, staff, Health Minister and Shiruna herself, when a poll showed 100 out of 101 respondents voting for her removal, she dismissed the concerns as motivated attacks rather than addressing the crisis.

MBS needs a serious reset. There are staff who are stuck in their ways, resist change, and actively block improvements. This isn’t just attitude.. it has already led to multiple negligence incidents.

Yet the same people are still in their positions like nothing happened. No accountability, no consequences. That’s the real issue. When people know nothing will happen to them, the system will keep failing.

Don’t just reshuffle top management and call it a fix. That does nothing if the same individuals responsible for these failures remain untouched.

There needs to be a transparent investigation, clear identification of those responsible, and real disciplinary action. Not internal silence, not quiet transfers.. actual accountability.

Patients’ lives are not a system you experiment with. Fix the culture, enforce responsibility, or be prepared for this to happen again.

This should scare you. Not just concern you. Actually scare you.

Because what we’re seeing isn’t an isolated mistake anymore. It’s becoming a pattern. A system where negligence keeps happening, and then silence follows.

And let’s be clear. We are not talking about paperwork or minor delays. We are talking about human lives. People’s loved ones. A child fighting to survive. A parent waiting for care. Families walking into hospitals trusting they will be taken care of, only to be failed when it matters most.

Think about that for a second.

You can do everything right. You can seek help, follow every instruction, wait patiently, trust the system. And still lose someone because someone else didn’t act, didn’t care enough, or simply let it slip.

Hospitals. Doctors. Nurses. Institutions. This isn’t about pointing at one person. It’s about a culture where delays, mistakes, and negligence are quietly brushed aside instead of being confronted. These cases are not rare. They happen more than we admit. They just don’t get talked about long enough.

And what happens after?

Nothing.

No proper investigation. No real answers. No accountability. The same people go back to work the next day like nothing happened, while families are left carrying grief that never leaves them.

And because there are no consequences, our health sector has become too comfortable. Too careless. There is an untouchable attitude growing where people know they won’t be held responsible, and that should worry every single one of us.

Sit with that.

Because this means something much bigger than one case. It means if it happens to you, if it’s your mother, your child, your brother, there is no guarantee anyone will answer for it. No guarantee anyone will even be forced to explain.

That is not just failure. That is dangerous.

We need an independent body, a separate committee or board that is not part of the same system, to investigate cases of medical negligence properly. Not internal reviews that protect institutions, but real, transparent investigations that protect people.

Every single person who failed in their duty must be identified and held accountable. Not quietly, not internally, but in a way that ensures this never happens again.

Because right now, what we are allowing is worse than negligence.

We are allowing a system where preventable deaths are absorbed, normalized, and forgotten.

And if that doesn’t make you uncomfortable, angry, and afraid, then we’ve already accepted something we never should have.

The thalassaemia community is dying, and MBS management, especially under Shirna’s complete incompetence, is doing absolutely nothing about it. While we bury our loved ones, one after the other, you all sit there, making excuse after excuse, while we are losing our lives.

We lost two patients this week alone. Two lives, gone, just like that. And what did we get from you? Nothing. Not a single step forward. We’re losing our friends. One by one. Every single day. And no one is listening. Each time we lose someone, it’s like another piece of us is ripped away. Families are being destroyed, parents are burying their children, and we’re left with nothing but grief, and yet, nothing changes. Your failure to act isn’t just neglect, it’s murder by incompetence.
