'Essential yet appealed'
Ok.
It doesn't mean the fresh start was attractive or exciting.
Essential = it had to happen. No other choice left. Staying would break her.
Yet appealed = she was still appealing it the whole time. Quietly resisting, bargaining with herself, hoping it didn't really need to go down like this. Pleading for another way.
She didn't want to leave. She didn't want the new life in Boston (Durham). She just ran out of ways to fight the necessity. So she carried all her heavy thoughts across that open field and relented anyway.

They can also adjust the tax to be a yearly tax, not just one time…again, without your approval.
