@HAILEYEPILLA @psyc220 This is a good reminder that sometimes making a difference is as simple as remembering other people are full people and trying to connect with them. #CD4
@kolbee_w @psyc220 I agree that the mainstream idea of feminism being related to an alt left is wrong and misleading. Feminism should be normalized regardless of politics since it affects so many people on both sides. #CD4
Feminism combats forms of oppression that present themselves against all gender identities. Achieving solidarity comes from sympathizing and understanding that this oppression occurs across different gender-related and even unrelated groups. @psyc220 #CD4
@jmukate @psyc220 This is especially important because even though marijuana is being decriminalized in a lot of the States now, the type of bias that people of color are affiliated with drugs or drug-related violence has remained. Side note: loved this series. #CD3b
@eddyah_ Even though I don't really agree with her approach to the UK's border control, I fully agree that people are too focused on the wrong thing when using her ethnic background against her – especially when most of the critics seem to be part of a white majority. #CD3b
This opinion article calls out a lack of action in immigration politics, recognizing legal immigration should be made more streamlined. It describes that immigrants often identify more closely with US patriotism than born US Americans despite race and/or ethnicity. @psyc220 #CD3b
What is the Biden administration getting wrong on #immigration? Hoover fellow @TimmerKane says "Biden should take advantage of his moment in history to boldly reform American refugee policy." Learn more: https://t.co/5aeEmhxWG1
Social constructs like race and ethnicity are lasting effects of historical events, provenly not biological. Ethnocentric privileged groups negatively-ascribe outgroups as "weird", "tribal", etc., standardizing preferential treatment based on "normal" experiences. @psyc220 #CD3a
@davitch_peyton @psyc220 I also think this issue can be related to marginalization, since not knowing English can lead to things like reduced job opportunities, media access, and public voice. #CD1b
An example of cultural imperialism is English becoming "normal" for countries that don't natively speak it; it's standardized in school curricula, used pervasively online and in business, and even used as one of two working languages in the UN. @psyc220 #CD1b
This flyer segment lists different cultural spaces for JMU students. It recognizes that people of certain cultures have group identity needs and gives them a space to talk about their experiences, which I feel represents a left-essentialist approach. @psyc220 #CD1a
@kmiller_psyc220 @WeTheUrban @psyc220 What type of multiculturalism you think is most represented here? I see some critical elements in that this message recognizes and broadly criticizes the effects of oppression. There's also the "elimination of human suffering" which you mention. @kmiller_psyc220 #CD1a
@psyc220 #HelloWorld I would love to travel to India. India has a very diverse cultural environment with plenty of variety in language, geography, and religion. I think I would get to learn a lot. There's also great food there.
