Barbara Kingsolver’s last book, “Demon Copperhead,” won the Pulitzer Prize in 2023, sat on the Times best-seller list for more than a year, and was voted the best book of the 21st century by the newspaper’s readers. But after she finished it, Kingsolver struggled with writer’s block. “I think it should actually be called writer’s fear,” she says. A Substack post, of all things, got her writing again. The headline was “Barbara Kingsolver Is a Fraud. “I had to know why,” she says, explaining her decision to click on the link. “Maybe I am a fraud!”
But Kingsolver, who writes what she calls socially engaged fiction, has always believed that the arts belong to everyone, and has spent her life writing books that she hopes can be read by anyone. Her latest book, “Partita” wrestles with the questions that have fuelled her whole career: who is art for, what makes it good, and what can it actually accomplish? Pope Leo: “We tend to think...that the only issue of morality is sexual....I believe there are much greater, more important issues, such as justice, equality, freedom of men and women, freedom of religion, that would all take priority before that" issue.
I love how MAGA apologists who ignored or even celebrated Trump’s character flaws now suddenly discover them and pretend to be brave truth tellers. When it would have cost them, they happily promoted the cult. Now they’re like “oh my God it’s a cult! Why can’t you see it?!”
