With research showing that simply opening a window could lessen the amount of harmful bacteria in hospital rooms, should we look towards alternative ways to soothe illness caused by pathogens? One such way being by introducing healthy bacteria through probiotics.

New approaches to parasite infections, such as river blindness caused by nematodes, are now geared to developmentally important symbionts. In the case of these nematodes, their symbiont Wolbachia with highly effective custom antibiotics.

There are organisms so heavily reliant on each other they literally live inside one another. Thatβs the case for the mealybug and its symbiont Tremblaya AND its symbiont Moranella. Together the three are suspected to work together to make essential amino acids.

With increasing population and the concern of food shortages, scientists have started to look into additional sources. One such source is cellulose, a compound made of glucose by plants but one we canβt digest. The solution? Maybe use termite bacteria.

Was told I have strep throat. Given a shot of antibiotics and pills of antibiotics. I fear for my normal microbiome. Sorry little ones!

The human microbiota is so complex that there is generally disagreement on how it should be viewed w/ established ecological theories. Perhaps the future of studying such a system is not only the merging of microbiology and ecology but also mathematics and models.

In this Review, Raes and colleagues present synthetic ecology approaches that reduce the complexity and advance translation of human gut microbiota research. @jeroenraes
With the increasing number of antibiotic resistant bacteria, scientists are turning their sight to phage therapy. Phage therapy is the use of bacteria viruses in controlled amount to aim for specific bacteria.

@alexplantnerd Hmm, I see what you mean but for some microbes itβs an absolute must to complete its life cycle. There are numerous organisms that actively seek to infect. Also not all organisms have a robust adaptive immune system. Take plants for example!
Choanoflagellates are our closest related protist cousins and have been shown to be influenced by certain bacterial compounds to form sociable predatory colonies that work as one. What an impact microbes may have!
