Five years ago today dictator Kais Saied carried out his coup in Tunisia transforming the only constitutional democracy in the Arab world into a one man dictatorship. In the years since, Tunisia is much worse off today. Civil liberties, democratic elections, and separation of powers have been abolished. Thousands of political prisoners languish in jail simply for being opponents of the dictator. Tyrant Saied has even jailed our own U.S. citizens. Corruption has increased phenomenally as Saied’s regime steals brazenly from the people of Tunisia as the economy remains a disaster destroying opportunities for the Tunisian youth. To top it off, Saied has moved from a partner to the U.S. to close associate of War Criminal Putin, the regime in Iran, and terrorist Hezbollah.

I am grateful that within hours of the coup I was one of the first members of Congress to condemn it. I urge the @StateDept to issue a travel warning of “level 4 do not travel” for Tunisia especially as it jails Americans, Europeans and anyone based upon what seems is the mood of a madman tyrant. I will also continue to work to pass the Tunisia Democracy Restoration Act imposing sanctions on Saied and his inner circle.

Democracy in Tunisia will win in the end. Madmen tyrants will not last. Free Tunisia 🇹🇳
