A comment I often get goes something like this:
"Out of 100 acts of violence in Denmark, 28 are carried out by people of non-Danish origin. So if you are subjected to violence, there is only a 28 percent probability that an immigrant is behind it."

At first glance this sounds reasonable. But the conclusion it draws is completely wrong.

The important thing to understand is that you are not an average person. The average person has one boob. If you are reading this, you are probably very different from the average victim of violence: probably not involved in gang activity, not in a relationship with a violent partner, and not someone who gets drunk and picks fights.

This means two things:
(1) your risk of being a victim of violence is far lower than average, and
(2) the kind of risk you face looks very different from the average victim's.

One risk you face is being attacked at random by a stranger on the street. And for that specific kind of violence, the probability that the perpetrator is a Muslim / African is far higher than the 28% that is the overall average statistic. It is unknown exactly how high it is, because not a single country keeps track of this important statistic. But it's not 28%.
