What most male gamers experience as “trash talk” is an order of magnitude less frequent and infinitely less depraved than what every single female gamer deals with every single time they sit down to play. It is relentless and omnipresent and overwhelming and drains them of the joy they might take from their leisure time. It can even sometimes lead to actual danger and damage. A mute button can’t fix the feeling that they are unwelcome. And that fucking sucks.

As a developer, I don’t want something I intended to bring happiness to be a conduit for misery. But no technical breakthrough, design decision or server tool is going to fix human nature.

The -only- thing that will actually stem abusive behavior from low status men is when their high status peers stop putting up with it and rebuke them. It’s a simple (and as complicated) as that.

I guess now you know who to blame…
