@tferriss@netflix Unlocked: A Jail Experiment. About guards leaving a cell block and unlocking all cell doors and basically telling the prisoners "be good."
@JayHO44Mace@notlouisck Oh is that the one where he's mad when someone says "the N word," because they just expect him to THINK the actual word in his head, and like.. wtf why didn't the person just take the responsibility to say it in the first place? That was pretty good.
Its confusing how people are opposed to @DOGE . They claim DOGE is going to cut social security, Medicaid, etc, but I don’t see evidence of this. Perhaps it’s because I work in government it’s easy for me to understand how inefficient things are, so I am rooting for DOGE to make lasting improvements. Notes from a recent DOGE interview:
“As a result of the work of DOGE, legitimate recipients of social security will receive MORE money, not less money. Let the record show that I said this and it will be proven out to be true.” – @elonmusk
The Social Security Office gets calls everyday from people who want to change their bank account information. FOURTY PERCENT is fraudulent. It happens everyday. Someone stops getting their social security checks because a fraudster convinced the social security office to change the bank account.
Brad Smith, working with HHS says “we 100% protect Medicare and Medicaid.” He plans to fix the problem of the 700 different IT software systems at NIH, which don’t talk to each other. Get the systems to talk to each other and science can improve. Also why are there 27 different Chief Information Officers at NIH?
There were $300 Million in small business loans given out to people under the age of 11. And an additional $300 Million over the age of 120. People steal kids social security numbers, take out a loan, and leave the kid with a bad credit rating. The simple fix of getting the social security system to talk to the small business administration systems will eliminate tremendous fraud.
@jgebbia Joe Gebbia, co-founder of AirBNB is working with Office of Personnel Management to digitalize the retirement process. “They’ve been trying to modernize and get off of paper since early 2000’s without success. Every attempt has gone over-budget, and has been cancelled because it hasn’t been successful.” Currently the retirement process is a paper process and takes months for someone to retire, and all the paperwork is kept in a mine underground. Joe says his system should be completed in a few months and will allow the retirement process to take days instead of months.
“We have to fix the computers. If the computers don’t talk to each other, you cant get research done. If computers cant stay online, people wont receive their social security. What we have here is a bunch of failing computer systems that are preventing people from receiving their benefits, that are preventing research from happening, that are extremely vulnerable to fraud, and we’re fixing it.” -Elon Musk
“We should agree that the country going bankrupt would be a bad thing.” -Steve Davis, DOGE Team

If anyone from the #HandsOffProtests has information that counters this, I would be happy to look at it.
@JonHaidt So what I'm seeing is that males have a significantly higher rate of suicide then females, BUT adult male rates are going down, they're getting better. Teen boy rates are up about 3% and teen girl rates are up almost 50% (!) from 2003.
@MikeLarremore@hankgreen I would definitely be on board to hear Hank explain how to upgrade the drinking water and recycled water systems! Desalination is also interesting.
@MikeLarremore@hankgreen Yes definitely. I was speaking for California, but I'm pretty sure most sewage combines the drained water from sinks and toilets together making it unusable for drinking even after treatment. I've seen a few rare places that use recycled water for lawns and toilets which is nice.
@MikeLarremore@hankgreen The drinking water treatment plant uses water from resevores to create drinking water that goes into peoples homes as tap water. Then all water going out of homes goes to the wastewater treatment plant where its cleaned to release into the ocean where it can't get used again.
@RobSchneider Perhaps because humanity feels pain and sorrow and is highly aware of it, and works towards lessening it in the world, one could say "our part" of the universe is just as big and significant as all the planets and stars we see in the night sky.
@jordanbpeterson I know I'm just one person, but I got Covid recently and am recovered except for my sense of smell and terrible brain fog. I was just telling someone today it feels like my IQ dropped. It affects nervous-system so it makes sense. I wouldn't dismiss it.
@jordanbpeterson "These aren't really "happy" thoughts, but when forced into my mind repeatedly they nuteralize negative thoughts:
"I am responsible" (when I feel life is out of control).
"It's not about me" (when I feel sorry for myself).
"I like myself" (when I have demoralizing thoughts).
@waitbutwhy I took the point as: We know our small actions can have big consequences (when our life is on the line), so we shouldn't brush off the small actions or inactions we choose each day, because the consequences could be just as dramatic.
@bthomas1966@davidmcraney Awesome book, but I think you're thinking of the 5 moral traits Haidt surveyed in people. Which shapes their personally but isn't THE big 5 :)
