The bell rang on the third floor of an Amsterdam boarding house.

The Jewish families hiding in the attic had thirty seconds.

The Gestapo searched the house eight times.

Each time, Tina opened the door dressed like an ordinary student.

She spoke fluent German and acted confused while officers overturned furniture and struck the walls, searching for hollow spaces.

Behind the hidden panel, people waited without moving.

The officers never found anyone.

But Tina’s resistance work extended far beyond the attic.

She traveled through Amsterdam by bicycle, sometimes covering fifty miles in a day.

Beneath groceries, she carried radios, weapons, coded messages, and forged identity papers.

She collected identification cards and carefully removed the photographs so they could be replaced with images of Jewish refugees.

Every document created another possible escape.

Tina was arrested nine times.

The Gestapo threatened and beat her.

She gave them nothing.

No names.

No addresses.

No information that could endanger the people depending on her.

In 1945, her former fiancé, Jewish physicist Abraham Pais, was captured.

Tina went directly to Gestapo headquarters carrying a letter from renowned scientist Niels Bohr.

She argued that Pais was a brilliant physicist whose life should be spared.

She refused to leave quietly.

Pais survived the war and later worked in the United States alongside some of the greatest scientific minds of his generation.

By the end of the occupation, more than one hundred people had passed through the Strobos home.

Not one was captured there.

After the war, Tina completed medical school, moved to New York, and became a psychiatrist.

For decades, many of her patients knew only a calm, thoughtful doctor.

They had no idea that she had once stood between frightened families and the Gestapo.

In 1989, Tina and her mother were honored as Righteous Among the Nations.

Tina Strobos never considered herself extraordinary.

She simply believed that when people were hunted, hiding them was the human thing to do.

Her courage did not arrive without fear.

It arrived at the front door, again and again, and opened it anyway.
