🤩 A huge success for Basia @dokkaebigirl!
🧐 Basia’s paper, “Reinventing the Corey–Fuchs Reaction under Ball Milling Conditions: A Mechanochemical Pathway to Bromoalkynes”, has just been published in ACS Omega @ACSPublications!

🧪 We have brought the classic Corey–Fuchs reaction—a well-known two-step name reaction used to convert aldehydes into alkyne derivatives—into the world of mechanochemistry! The developed protocol is carried out entirely without solvents and consists of two independent ball-milling steps:
1️⃣ the synthesis of 1,1-dibromoalkenes using only half the conventional amount of triphenylphosphine,
2️⃣ dehydrohalogenation, which—contrary to expectations—leads to 1-bromoalkynes rather than terminal alkynes.
😌 We were unable to develop a one-pot protocol, as the nature of the reaction and the by-products formed during the process essentially rule out such an approach. Another challenge was presented by aldehydes containing acidic protons (e.g. phenolic –OH or carboxylic acid –COOH groups), which caused the decomposition of the in situ generated dibromomethylenetriphenylphosphorane (Ph₃P=CBr₂).
🙂↕️ On the other hand, we significantly reduced the reaction time and achieved a clear improvement in green chemistry metrics, including the Process Mass Intensity (PMI) and E-factor. Our results demonstrate that both the electronic properties of the substrates and the milling parameters play key roles in determining the efficiency and selectivity of the process, further expanding the potential of mechanochemistry as a more sustainable approach to organic synthesis.

‘When I was a student, textbooks were very dry. They contained very few diagrams, very few pictures and lots of text,’ explains Catherine Housecroft.

📢 The journal *Scientific Reports*, published by Springer Nature, has been criticized for publishing fraudulent studies in an open letter signed by numerous well-known experts in scientific fraud. 📲 Link to the letter: https://t.co/Is5XMEdnwb
📑 Citing @ChemistryWorld: "Since 2014, 25 articles in Scientific Reports have been flagged for containing tortured phrases. Over the same period, 262 articles have been retracted by the journal, according to a database managed by Retraction Watch, which records why papers are retracted. ‘They’ve published 23k papers in 2024 with article processing charges of £2090, raising £49 million from this journal alone,’ says Bishop. ‘So they should be able to put resource into cleaning this up.’"
