A Vibrant Indigenous Organisation Registered in Uganda to transform youth and women through sustainable opportunities and decent work in a thriving community.
We begin the week with a caution. Piling pressure on learners to deliver impressive results can affect their wellbeing, confidence and motivation.
Instead, let us support children to improve literacy and numeracy, while also nurturing life skills and values that prepare them for 21st-century challenges.

Today, our #LifeSkillsandValues Weekend Series-delves into nurturing empathy at home.
When children listen, share, comfort a sibling, help a friend, or notice how others feel, they are building an important social-emotional skill for life.
@UwezoUganda looks forward to hearing experiences on how you are helping grow empathy among children around you.

Evidence Generation: For @UwezoUganda to generate their evidence, a lot of planning happens including working with government of Uganda 🇺🇬 agencies such as; @NCDCUg to develop test items and @StatisticsUg who support with the sampling strategy and generation of Enumeration Areas.
Then comes, the cascade trainings for Master Trainers all-through to the district partners and volunteers-which phases are all highly quality assured through close supervision and monitoring to ensure that the data we collect digitally is of high quality and trusted.

Benson Ongom, District Inspector of Schools, Oyam DLG, on teacher confidence and esteem:
“When civil servants are called upon to stand up, it takes time for a teacher to rise boldly in the community. Yet they forget — the President, the engineer, the doctor, and every professional exists because of a teacher. @EchidnaGiving@ReliAfrica@UwezoUganda@gricafrica@oyamdistrict@SaraRuto_
Foundational learning, life skills, and strong values are the bedrock of Africa’s future. Education must go beyond classrooms to build capable, confident citizens who can drive real development.
#AfricaDay
As we celebrate #AfricaDay today, we at @UwezoUganda believe that Africa’s future depends on investing in foundational learning, life skills and values-not simply as an education priority but also as a broader continental development priority.

As schools in Uganda prepare to reopen for the second term, FICH and the Oyam District Education Department have organised a Peer Learning Workshop (Continuous Professional Development) at all 6 CCT Centres in Oyam District!
Over 300 teachers came together to learn from one another, share experiences, including managing large classrooms, and strengthen their practice.
Key areas covered: Curriculum Interpretation, Scheme of Work (P1-P7), Professional Code of Conduct, Practical Micro-Teaching & more.
Oyam DEO David Adea highlighted a major challenge: “Teachers deliver effectively for only about 6 years before commitment drops, which is a major obstacle to learning outcomes.” #TeacherDevt #FICHCPD
For Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) to be truly effective, teachers need locally made high-quality, context-relevant teaching and learning aids.
FICH & GRIC Africa are glad to see the 48 teachers actively making their own materials and learning from one another during the ongoing 5-day refresher training. This hands-on session is helping them develop practical tools they can immediately use in their classrooms.
By strengthening teachers’ ability to create and use these aids, we are ensuring smoother and more impactful TaRL implementation across Oyam, Kole, Lira, and Arua districts.
Together with the 14 Head Teachers, experts from @gricafrica, @VVOBinUganda , we continue to close learning gaps and improve foundational education in Northern Uganda #FICHGRICimpactsUg
UGANDA TEAM
GRiC, in partnership with @fichuganda , is currently conducting a five-day intensive training in Lira, Northern Uganda, bringing together teachers, headteachers, and mentors implementing the Accelerated Learning Program and Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach
While the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology has shown great promise, its implementation has not been without challenges. In response, FICH has organised a special targeted session for TaRL Mentors and Head Teachers (representing school administration).
This important session aims to openly identify existing gaps and equip school leaders with practical solutions.
Since Head Teachers play a critical role in driving school-level improvement, strengthening their capacity will lead to smoother and more effective TaRL rollout across schools. #FICH_GRICimpactsUg
TaRL Refresher Training Underway in Lira City
A total of 14 Head Teachers and 48 Teachers implementing Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) are undergoing an intensive 5-day refresher training in Lira City.
The training started yesterday and runs until Friday. The focus is to equip these 62 educators with practical skills to close learning gaps among learners in the Oyam, Kole, Lira, and Arua districts.
We are glad to be joined by experts from @gricafrica and @VVOBinUganda who are supporting participants in sharpening their facilitation skills and developing quality teaching and learning materials.
TaRL is a proven, highly effective learner-centred approach that originated in India and has helped millions of children catch up in reading and numeracy. It continues to transform foundational education in Northern Uganda. #FICH_GRICimpactsUg

This week, @UwezoUganda with @palnetworkHQ and district partners-Youth Fraternity for Change in Isingiro (@YfcUganda), and Care Community Education Centre-Child Development (@CCEDUC1) in Yumbe; are kickstarting a pre-pilot process to test the feasibility of integrating Reading, Numeracy and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) assessments in household settings.
The three-day training and pre-test prepares citizen surveyors to conduct another three days of household-based assessment of children aged 5–16 in host and refugee communities. The exercise will then wrap up with reflections to refine the tools, language delivery and field protocols.
Participating in and providing technical support to this pre-pilot exercise are officials from the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC), an agency of Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda🇺🇬.

🔢 Real-life "ethno maths" Vs Traditional reading & maths:
About 54.5% of children in P3-P7 successfully solved verbal “ethno-maths” or real-life numeracy tasks, compared to 24.7% who achieved combined reading and numeracy competence, as reported in the 2024 @UwezoUganda report.
Children can be assisted to achieve victories in maths through exposure to the following simple home errands:
🛒 Shopping
💰 Budgeting
📏 Measuring ingredients
🔄 Handling money change, etc

#LifeSkillsandValues Weekend Series: You don't have to learn teamwork only through sports. Simple things at home like cooking together, cleaning the yard, gardening, or getting ready for guests; can teach children to cooperate, be patient, and share responsibilities.
Which activities have helped your children/youth learn to work with others over the holiday?

FICH held a fruitful engagement with Oyam District Education Department & CCTs. The CCTs will now support district inspectors in providing continuous teacher training, mentoring & improving classroom practices at schools.
DEO, represented by Benson Ongom, acknowledged learning gaps & expressed deep appreciation to partners for stepping in. Oyam has 109 public primary schools, only 4 inspectors & large classrooms remain a persistent challenge, with an average pupil-teacher ratio of 88:1 (national target 40:1), with some schools at 155:1.
📊📉 Big gaps (especially reading) exist between private and public schools in Uganda 🇺🇬.
📖 English reading (P3–P7):
Private schools: 41.9%
Public schools: 22.5%
🔢 Numeracy (P3–P7):
Private schools: 64.9%
Public schools: 52.8%
We ask: What are private schools doing differently that public schools aren't🔎?

Children and young people often throw at us quite unexpected questions that demand immediate answers. How do you usually deal with such cases? Are you the type that shuts them up, or do you deflect back the question to trigger them to think more deeply?
Share with us what you are doing, and whether you would like ideas from us on how to better support children’s curiosity and problem-solving.

Holidays are the best classroom for life skills; chores for responsibility, play for collaboration, and talks for respect & confidence. #LifeSkillsandValues
Now that children are home🛖🏘️for the holidays, let us endeavour to use everyday routines as learning opportunities for nurturing life skills and values. Home chores build responsibility, play can strengthen teamwork while family conversations can grow respect and confidence.
Beyond these, children and young people also need life skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration and; values like respect and integrity; nurtured at home, school, and community.
This is the spirit of Phase III of the @alive_programme, whose ambition is to embed life skills and values in every learner’s experience, and with a target to reach 10 million children aged 4-17 across East Africa by 2030.
How can we help one another nurture life skills and values during the school holidays? Share one simple practice that is helping your children build responsibility, respect, teamwork, creativity or problem-solving at home.
Your idea could inspire another family.
