Locals still call it the “cucumber lion”.

The story is that Bavarian troops gorged on unguarded field cucumbers in the heat and died of it. Disease did the killing: typhus in 1833–34. The cucumber version is a folk explanation with a political edge. Bavarian rule was unpopular.
