Incidental finding in an adrenal gland resected from a patient with primary aldosteronism. Note the spindle cell whorls within a reticular network. I will show you two immunostains - then you can tell me what this is!
📣 Diagnosis: Branchial cleft cyst
•Congenital lesions due to incomplete obliteration of the branchial apparatus
•Microscopy:
- Stratified squamous or ciliated columnar epithelium lining
- Fibrotic wall with lymphoid follicles resembling lymph node or tonsil
•Radiological correlation is very important
•Few questions that came up during discussion
•How to differentiate from thyroglossal cyst? TG cysts are usually midline and closely related to hyoid bone. Cyst lining varies and maybe denuded with severe inflammation. Thyroid inclusions present in many cases.
•Epidermoid cyst - Have appendages in the cyst wall and usually doesn’t show this degree of lymphoid aggregates. Radiological correlation is important.

I couldn’t be happier that my #MRI#brain scan last Friday showed no evidence of recurrence of my #glioblastoma! It’s now 13.5 months since my seizure in Poland when it showed up.
I cannot thank the entire neuro-oncology team enough for looking after me & supporting me so well including A/Prof Michael Back who went through the scans with me.
Thanks also to expert #neuroradiologist Dr Jamie Drummond for interpreting the scans and the North Shore Radiology team.
I am so fortunate to have such a fabulous caring team looking after me so well especially my wonderful wife Katie & family, friends & colleagues.
A #cancer journey is incredibly difficult for patients and their families and just as I continue to rely on my neuro-oncology clinical team for their expert guidance, I strongly encourage all brain cancer patients to continue consulting their own medical teams.

Randomly came across some of my favorite histology images while looking for something else. A completely normal hedgehog quill. Resharing, because just look at the piloerector muscles that power up the quill!
