Our new paper on the circuit implementation of evidence integration in larval zebrafish is now on bioRxiv!

[Bahl Lab @BahlLab]

We are proud to present our new preprint “Correlative light and electron microscopy reveals the fine circuit structure underlying evidence accumulation in larval zebrafish”, just posted on bioRxiv (https://t.co/pYHYh26vSo). (1/10)

WELCOME BACK! Join us for an aptly themed Let's Get Social Neurotalks next week to kick off the new year.

Social robots, and how flies use touch to make social decisions with @MarkeliusAlva and @flofightscience.

🪰 A team of researchers has unveiled the complete connectome of a male fruit fly central nervous system—a seamless map of all the neurons in the brain and nerve cord of a single male fruit fly and the millions of connections between them.

This work would not have been possible without the support of @UniKonstanz, @CBehav, @MPI_animalbehav, @zukunftskolleg, @ERC_Research, @Boehringer, NIH U19, and the #DFG. (7/7)

[Bahl Lab @BahlLab]

A big thanks to our co-authors Sophie Aimon, @_maxcapelle, @flofightscience, Heike Naumann, Herwig Baier, @KrasimirSlanch1, as well as our colleagues in the Neurobiology department, and scientific support structures of the @UniKonstanz. (6/7)

These results demonstrate how distinct visual features are extracted, processed in parallel, and eventually integrated to guide behavior. This modular and parallel circuit architecture provides a context-flexible solution for transforming sensory input into action. (5/7)

[Bahl Lab @BahlLab]

We investigated the morphology and neurotransmitters of functionally identified neurons and show how the identified pathways converge in the anterior hindbrain. (4/7)

[Bahl Lab @BahlLab]

Through brain-wide 2P calcium imaging, we identify neurons whose activity matches our model components. (3/7)

[Bahl Lab @BahlLab]

We find that zebrafish compute three visual features–motion, luminance level, and changes in luminance–and simply add cues to choose swim direction. Our model captures behavior and predicts potential computations in the brain. (2/7)

[Bahl Lab @BahlLab]

Larval zebrafish follow the direction of whole-field motion #OMR and prefer to swim towards brighter areas #phototaxis. But what happens in the brain when motion goes left, and there is brightness on the right? (1/7)

[Bahl Lab @BahlLab]

How do brains make decisions when faced with multiple, potentially conflicting cues? In our latest preprint, we show how #zebrafish use an additive strategy and process multiple visual features through anatomically distinct parallel pathways https://t.co/JzYRCPtoGW Thread 👇

I’m thrilled to share that I’m starting my lab at @MpiBrain in Frankfurt, Germany! 🐠🧠🔬

We will explore how brain circuits give rise to the computational algorithms animals use to solve real-world problems - using the larval zebrafish as a model.
More soon!

Excited to be back in Pristina for the second Behavioral Neurobiology Summer School at University of Pristina. Two weeks of awesome science ahead! @EUErasmusPlus @UniKonstanz

[Bahl Lab @BahlLab]

We are proud to have @_maxcapelle's paper out on bioRxiv! He found that phototactic behavior in #zebrafish switches during #ontogeny🐟🔆Through elegant behavioral dissections, he identifies the navigational strategies related to this transition. https://t.co/QLVAacO0kC Thread 👇

[LMB-IP Graduate Life Sciences Symposium @LMBPhDSymposium]

This year's symposium will be co-organized with the world-renowned Institute Pasteur - a leading institution at the forefront of innovative biology research. Sign up to connect with some of the best minds in life sciences and learn from the experts! (1/2)

[actually it’s good @yungchomsky]

happy holiday

[Robert Hindges @RobertHindges]

Congrats to DR. Phoebe @pheereynolds for passing the PhD viva with examiners Colin Akerman and @JohannesLarsch and a very proud supervisor. Amazing work on visual plasticity. Stay tuned for the entire story soon. Thanks to @KCL_MRCDTP for the studentship @dev_neuro @KingsIoPPN

The first paper from the lab is out on biorxiv - enjoy reading! Social context and interactions influence our behavioral decisions - the same is true for the little fly larva:
Multimodal social context modulates behavior in larval Drosophila
