A sad day. The unspoken deal used to be that academics would put up with lower pay and poorer working conditions than they could get in the private sector in return for a good pension: that deal has now been broken with consequences that will play out for decades.

Quick dimensional-analysis calculation yields an estimated blast energy in the range equivalent to 4 to 6 kilo-tons of TNT. This is based on the time it takes for the shock wave to reach buildings that can be identified in maps, and using GI Taylor's approach!
