Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries:
“It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.
“There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion.
“If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the ‘medicine closet’ and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That’s why you should always have a nutrition choice!
“Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity.”
And Rabin was a man of steel and a man of peace; yea, a fighter and a dreamer, who gave his life for his people; and it came to pass on the fourth day of November, in that accursed year, that grievous calamity befell Israel, and mourning and lamentation were upon all her cities.
There wasn’t a single community event this year where we didn’t remember Sasha Troufanov, drink #coffee4sasha & pray for his safe return.
Today the #TLVCommunity’s hopes & prayers were answered.
Welcome home Sasha! 🥲

Very excited to be speaking about the 45 year journey of the @NASAVoyager spacecraft and the lessons it has for us in our modern #devops & #sre lives. Join me on October 10th-11th!

July 20th, 1969 is a date that stands high in my life – it was the day that we, together as one people, achieved the greatest scientific and technological feat in human history. The specific role that Neil, Mike and I performed in the event was but one part of an immeasurably larger effort – not just for our nation, but for all mankind. As I look back on what we accomplished 55 years ago, I am still inspired by what we all saw and did – the best of America and the best of humanity. Thank you for the privilege and the honor of serving you, and for being part of this exciting and wonderous journey with me. #Apollo11
@rakyll I grew up on green and amber terminals and black and white dos boxes. I never liked light mode guis and was glad when dark mode options became ubiquitous. No more weird rectangles in my vision when I go to bed.
@LauraMDMaguire It's a collaboration platform. I think that one of the keys is the last part of your definition - virtual communities.
The company I work with and the teams I belong to are not virtual.
The groups and networks I'm a member of in Social Media are virtual.
@HugoAttal@vponamariov And another complication is that things change throughout the year.
The hours of Sun one gets in July are not the hours one gets in December.
Still, very nice!
