New paper in @ASHAJournals! Excited to share our look at speech perception, vocab, and PA in school-aged kids with #SSD. With @JPreston_SLP, @ERHitchcockSLP, @BITSlabNYU, @meganleece, statistician Qiu Wang, and undergrad author Kelly Garcia. https://t.co/itrjKUYVrh
This was mostly a general-audience thread (despite the weeds). But linguist/phonetician twitter, what do you think? Do we have a shot? I believe the IPA (the Association) has shot this down before. Is anybody interested in taking this up?
While phoneticians are on Twitter b/c of the ASA, we have a ❓. I'm sure many of you have observed a silent interval on a spectrogram btwn a fric & nasal in many languages. What causes this silence? If you're segmenting sounds, does the silent interval go w/the fric or the nasal?
As part of her master's research, one of our students is looking for Irish speakers (both native and learners) for a 10min listening task to do with the quality of a synthetic voice. Follow the link below - thanks!

Pls help PhD student Haifa Alhumaid with research on orthography & L2 phonology. You: native speaker of UK English; spent the majority of your life living in the UK; no experience of Arabic; GCSE level or BELOW in another language. £15 Amazon gift card! Message me for details.
Part of learning phonetics is learning to reject some impressionistic labels (“singsongy”), to reassign some impressionist labels to a technical meaning (“nasal”), and to acquire some new impressionistic labels which we treat as technical (“light” and “dark” l, “liquids”)
Are there any phonetic transcription learning tools out there where students can hear a sound, attempt to identify it and can get feedback on whether they did ok on sound to symbol mapping? #linguistics#phonetics
