🎓 TFELTP Residents Showcase Research at the 14th MUHAS Scientific Conference

Seven residents from the Tanzania Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (TFELTP)—six from Cohort 17 and one from Cohort 18—presented their research at the 14th MUHAS Scientific Conference, held from 1–3 July 2026 in Dar es Salaam.

Under the theme, "Innovating for Resilient and Sustainable Universal Health Coverage in the Era of Shifting Global Health Financing," the residents delivered 5 poster presentations and 2 oral presentations, sharing evidence on priority public health issues affecting Tanzania.

Scientific communication is a cornerstone of FETP training, equipping field epidemiologists to translate research into action, engage with decision-makers, and strengthen evidence-informed public health policies.

Their participation was supported through the Pandemic Fund, implemented by AFENET, reaffirming our commitment to building a skilled public health workforce capable of strengthening disease surveillance, improving health systems, and advancing Universal Health Coverage.

A multidisciplinary team of eight Tanzania Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (TFELTP) residents (three from Cohort 16 and five from Cohort 17) and mentors was last month deployed to Rukwa Region to support the ongoing response to a #choleraoutbreak and conduct an #Mpoxsensitization activity.
As of May 21, the region had recorded 1,323 cholera cases and 15 deaths (Case Fatality Rate: 1.1%), with over 93% of cases reported from Sumbawanga District Council.
The team played a critical role in strengthening key response pillars including #surveillance, #casemanagement, #laboratorysupport, #coordination, #riskcommunication and #communityengagement (RCCE), Water, sanitation and hygiene (#WASH)/infection prevention and control (#IPC), and logistics.
Through a combination of field investigations and real-time data analysis, the team helped to identify and address critical gaps in the outbreak response.
