So einfach ist es nicht. Der Rhein lebt im Sommer nicht nur vom Regen, sondern vom Wasserspeicher der Alpen. Historisch stammen beim Alpenrhein rund 55 % des jährlichen Abflusses aus der Schneeschmelze. In trockenen Sommern kommt zusätzlich wichtiges Wasser aus den Gletschern.

Doch dieser Speicher verschwindet: Wärmere Winter bedeuten weniger Schnee, die Schneedecke schmilzt früher und die Gletscher schrumpfen. Winterregen fließt dagegen größtenteils ab – er wartet nicht auf den trockenen August.

Deshalb müssen wir in den kommenden Jahrzehnten mit immer weniger Wasser in unseren Flüssen rechnen – gerade im Sommer. Jeden Sommer weniger Wasser! Wir bekommen mehr Wasser zur falschen Zeit und verlieren die Reserve für die trockenen Monate. Ein verregneter Herbst ersetzt keinen verschwundenen Gletscher.

Why Europe Is the Fastest-Warming Continent.

Here is a curious thing about our warming planet: it doesn’t warm evenly. The physics are the same everywhere, but geography plays favorites, and Europe has drawn the short straw. The continent is heating up roughly twice as fast as the global average, which seems unfair until you look at a map and see why.

Europe sits uncomfortably close to the Arctic, which is warming faster than anywhere on Earth as its reflective ice gives way to dark, heat-absorbing ocean. Land also warms faster than water, and Europe is a big lump of land parked at high latitude.

Then there’s the clean air problem, of all things. For decades, Europe’s industrial haze acted like a dirty parasol, bouncing sunlight back into space. When the continent cleaned up its act, the parasol vanished, and the full warming finally showed through.

None of this requires believing anyone’s politics. It just requires believing in thermometers, and thermometers, inconveniently, have no agenda.
