No one feels sorry for him but let’s be honest, these type of people are net assets to any country, not just the amount of tax they pay but imagine how much they spend in their local economy.
Show me the incentive, I’ll show you the behaviour. Higher tax rates will make people leave.
We need to spend less and tax less.
@MerrynSW Some/most (take your pick) are there for money laundering but why would local or national gov care, think of the combined additional millions in taxs they’re all collecting across thousands of shops
@HomeStarMovie@RupertLowe10 100% agree, but part of that challenge is reduce spending on welfare (of all kinds) and people will see that as a reduction in money to them. Majority won’t vote for that short term pain, even though without it they’d be worse off in the long run
@RyanNgo21504343@SamCKx The high income foreigner workers, my wife included so I speak from experience. Don’t claim as they don’t qualify for any of the welfare benefits so this wouldn’t be an issue
@andyburnham The reason is inflation. Inflation is caused when caused when governments print/spend/borrow money uncontrollably. When tax’s are increased or thresholds kept the same.
Spend less, tax less, let people keep more of their own money. That’s the only way to fix it.
@flexi_time@PolitlcsUK I agree, but everyone will need a private pension in old age, state penison won’t be worth much at all and the younger you start saving the bigger it will be.
@dsajhf@PolitlcsUK I agree, but if their declining promotions or work for to avoid paying higher fees, they could could still advance and pocket the money (albeit in a pension) for the long term.
@ukhomeoffice Where have they gone? Illegal immigration is still high and hardly any have been returned? So either you’ve granted them visas or they’re in a different type of funded accommodation?
Please correct me if I’m wrong in those assumptions?
@iamtomskinner@andyburnham This but it should be in exchange for benefits/job seekers allowance. Only for those that should/could be working but aren’t. If you choose not to work when you can then to get benefits from the state, the state should get something in return
@TypeForVictory@ArnoldLabour That seems such a back to front way of doing it. Why not tax people less and reduce UC. Let people keep more of their own money and spend it how they want.
Why do we need to keep increasing welfare. Tax less and reduce welfare.
@DanNeidle What’s the break even price of the house value vs council tax (approx.) In Reading i estimate it’s about 700k house value for similar council tax for band E. It would be great if a model could work this out if you input house value, council bad and local authority?
Obvious question but why would the gov care? They are getting more tax off the landlord with higher prices, business rates and a lot of tax on the back of the money laundering operation which is clearly going on in so many of these shops. What’s their incentive to step in and put a stop to it?
@Gabriel_Pogrund Not trying to defend Reform here, far from it, but because you reported Tice for breaking the law by underpaying tax doesn’t make it true. Has HMRC or any other gov body charged him? Asked him to pay more
It would only ever be projections and guess work, but then most policy ideas seem to be.
I’d be more focussed on the impact it would have on the kids, what if education levels improved 5%? You could easily create a model that lifetime benefit of those kids would outway the £5B cost per year.
