'Why are we spending money on a dangerous illusion?'
Reem Alsalem's observation on supporting male lactation.
This is a massive child safeguarding failure @NormaFoleyTD1
Many thanks to @NewstalkFM for doing what @rteliveline would not.

A speaker who had lectured on “Inducing Lactation for Kinksters” was booked to address Ireland’s lactation consultants. Then the press got involved. The venue pulled out. The conference collapsed.
But the bigger question is: how did this ever seem normal?

UN special Rapporteur Reem Alsalam @UNSRVAW spoke to
Ciara Kelly about the controversy surrounding men inducing lactation.
“There is no state obligation to normalise a fetish.”
Reem said that mothers produce milk to nourish their baby. Breast feeding is also important both for mother & baby as a way to bond.
Who is benefiting from men chemically inducing lactation? It’s a violation of the child when men involve a baby in this activity.
Why spend money on upholding a dangerous delusion? Men cannot produce nourishing milk for a baby. Why is admitting this so controversial?
Policies should be supporting mothers to breast feed instead.
Reem also asked “how is this a diversity issue.”The child must be centred and given priority.
Male lactation has nothing to do with what’s best for baby.
Listen here.
@CarrollJennifer@OCallaghanJim Ministers need to pay attention to this issue. They have been disappointingly very quiet.
@laoisedebrun
A fantastic and refreshing interview on @TheHardShoulder. One of the few stations brave enough to discuss the threats against women’s rights, Ciara Kelly did a fantastic job here.

Thank you so much for having UN Special Rapporteur Reem Alsalem on to talk about Surrogacy and male lactation. She is so clear about what these both entail.

@Louisehassan4@drivebylawyer5@rteliveline@HSELive We also rang Live Line and spoke to a really nice woman who said she would ask if this topic would be covered. Disappointing to hear that they won’t. The live line is certainly “not open”.!
A few more examples today of minimum and median getting mixed up in the media. This is not the income you need to buy a home in the relevant counties. It's the income you need to be able to afford half the homes, on the market, in that county. Maths matters. Granted - this doesn't change the fact that homes remain unaffordable for lots of people. That's true too.
UN Special Rapporteur Reem Alsalem @UNSRVAW talks to @NewstalkFM's Ciara Kelly about the ALCI controversy. Reem couldn't be clearer about the dangers of endorsing male lactation:
"Certainly it would not be in the interests of the child...it would be a violation of the child's rights. Under international law a child has the right to the highest standards of health. The best interest of the child has to guide all actions governing the treatment of the child"
