This is separate & not identical but victims of domestic violence will sometimes deny that they have been hurt or say that they’d hurt themselves; a friend may have to reason with them. The shock is such that they can’t allow themselves to believe that a person they had feelings for had hurt them.
Unfortunately this can diminish the severity of the charges. The propensity to deny being mistreated or exploited extends to other aspects of life including politics.
