@LVTYIMBY I mean the literal (and IMO illustrative) answer is "international waters". You have to provide your own everything (water, food, sanitation, healthcare, military, legal system, etc.), but you won't have to pay taxes.
@yhdistyminen I think where we're stuck now is something like "every block decides if it wants to be a cul-de-sac", and they all vote yes (because less traffic is nicer), and we're surprised that no one can get anywhere.
The reason you can tell the entire senior property taxes conversation is bogus and just another reverse wealth transfer scheme is that it would do nothing for the actually poor seniors because they rent.
@mattyglesias@humantransit Originally justified as a way to make eminent domain cheaper in the event of street widening https://t.co/mcyvCW0kBY, but likely a pretext to put a price floor under suburban housing.
@humantransit The reason we have more than one time zone in the first place is to allow noon to happen near the middle of the day. There’s no benefit to everyone effectively moving one time zone to the east year-round.
@Patri0tTeaParty@realsaadasad@PatsSoxFreedom@Zuk_DC@billyez2 If you want to change stairwells for some reason, you go to the nearest landing, open a fire-rated door, walk around a u-shaped hallway past the elevators, open another fire-rated door. If you don’t, you can walk down uninterrupted to exit at ground level.
@captgouda24 There’s a huge difference in externalities between 10 over on a freeway (whatever, don’t be an idiot) and on e.g. a 25 mph street with kids and pets around (arguably the most sociopathic thing otherwise normal people do on a regular basis)
The Electoral College has one purpose: preventing the unwashed idiot masses from electing a demagogue. It has never done this. In 2016, the unruly mob wanted a boring neoliberal centrist. The Electoral College overruled them and picked a demagogue
on this year's Tax Day we all need to embrace more tax positivity, every tax has its value
- income taxes generate massive revenues
- property and land taxes capture rents
- consumption taxes are highly efficient
- tariffs
- carbon taxes are good for the environment
Society really should have better answers than just "kill yourself" or "infinite rent-seeking luddism" for people who lose their jobs due to big market changes
@BCFerries I understand the Queen of Alberni is having some issues with drinking water on board. What’s the situation with the galley? Fully open or grab & go only?
