It's amazing how Americans don't know our own history of interventions in Latin America. In the early 20th century, we had Marines in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba. We occupied Nicaragua for more than 20 years! (1912-33, with a brief interruption) But it's not "ancient" history either: LBJ sent 20k troops into the DR in 1965. Reagan was so deep into Central American wars it could have cost him the presidency. The point is, these sorts of interventions have been the norm throughout US history. US presidents did them for different reasons -- Teddy Roosevelt saw Washington as a regional policeman ("big stick"), Woodrow Wilson wanted to "teach the South American republics to elect good men," Taft believed in acting to defend the US corporate interest ("dollar diplomacy"). With Trump we've heard versions of all these ideas in recent days. You may support it, you may oppose it, but it is not NEW at all.

Après la fierté offerte par la qualification inédite de nos Grenadiers, cette reconnaissance dans les Registres du monde vient cimenter notre droit plein et entier à participer aux débats, aux compétitions et aux élans internationaux. Notre contribution aux arts, aux sports, à l’avancement de l’humanité demeure encore et toujours possible.

Si l’inscription de la Soupe Joumou rappelait notre rôle pionnier dans la conquête universelle de la liberté, si la Cassave marquait notre place dans l’histoire millénaire et stratifiée du bassin caribéen — carrefour de civilisations, de cultures et de blessures — le Konpa, lui, réaffirme notre attachement inaliénable à l’amour, à la joie de vivre, à la liberté d’expression : ce rythme auquel se lève l’aube avec entrain, contre toute attente, et qui parfume les lendemains d’espoir face à tous les défis.

Je me réjouis que cette musique qui cimente notre identité soit désormais gravée et célébrée. Ma gratitude va à l’ex Ministre de la Culture, Emmelie Prophète, pour son soutien constant durant le processus d’inscription ; à la Commission nationale d’Haiti pour l’UNESCO ; à l’expert-rédacteur Ricarson Dorcé ; et surtout à toute la communauté porteuse de ce savoir-faire national, mobilisée avec conviction en Haiti comme dans la diaspora, à chaque étape de ce cheminement.

Je vis cette victoire avec une pensée spéciale pour le grand Dadou Pasquet, qui s’en réjouissait déjà au moment du dépôt de la candidature en 2024.
