An Indian consulate’s job is to advance India’s interests abroad.

So when India’s Seattle Consulate organizes Diwali celebrations inside governors’ mansions, state capitols and city halls, we shouldn’t automatically view them as just nice community holiday events.

Americans should stop pretending culture and foreign policy exist in completely separate boxes.

If the Consulate’s purpose is to advance India’s interests, why wouldn’t we evaluate its cultural outreach through that same lens?
