Today Morning , I intercepted a school van transporting pupils under dangerously overcrowded conditions. This is a stark reminder of how road negligence threatens our most vulnerable.

Our children's safety is non-negotiable. I have called on traffic police to strictly enforce safety regulations and clamp down on school vehicle overloading.

To school proprietors, headteachers, and drivers: our children are not cargo. They are the future of Uganda. Take full responsibility for their safety. No convenience is worth a child’s life. Let’s choose safety, always.

Yesterday at the National Leadership Institute (NALI), Kyankwanzi, I had the distinct privilege of engaging with our Ugandan brothers and sisters who recently returned home from South Africa. While the circumstances that prompted their return were regrettable, our focus was not on yesterday’s challenges but on the opportunities that lie ahead.

My message was anchored on one word: OPPORTUNITY. I emphasized that returning home was not a step backward but a fresh beginning to rebuild, innovate, and contribute to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.

Our returnees came home with valuable skills, global exposure, business experience, and resilience, assets that can significantly contribute to Uganda’s growth. I highlighted opportunities in agro-industrialisation, the digital economy, innovation, tourism, and entrepreneurship, and encouraged them to become innovators,and wealth creators driving our nation’s development.

We reaffirmed our commitment to expanding access to finance, strengthening skills development, supporting enterprise, and creating market opportunities for young people.

I commended H.E. The President @KagutaMuseveni for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the welfare of Ugandans, including those living abroad.

Today, I visited our fellow Ugandans who were recently repatriated from South Africa and are currently undergoing reintegration support in Kyankwanzi. It was encouraging to interact with them and share the various Government programmes they can benefit from as they rebuild their lives back home.

I encouraged them to take advantage of initiatives aimed at skills development, wealth creation, and access to affordable financing so they can successfully reintegrate into their communities and contribute to Uganda’s development.

I also took the opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of Ugandans wherever they may be. My gratitude also goes to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Works and Transport, the UPDF, the Uganda Police Force, our Embassy in South Africa led by Ambassador Paul Amoru, and all the agencies and stakeholders whose dedication made the safe repatriation of our compatriots possible.

The Government of Uganda remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting its citizens and ensuring they are supported to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

I had the honour of accompanying the final flight of Phase I, carrying 219 Ugandan nationals from Johannesburg 🇿🇦 back home to Uganda.

This has been an important chapter in a humanitarian mission that reunited families, restored hope and reaffirmed our Government’s commitment to protecting Ugandans wherever they may be.

At exactly 23:45hrs EAT, 153 Ugandan nationals voluntary repatriated from Cape Town, South Africa safely landed at Entebbe International Airport.

The flight also transported the remains of one Ugandan national who tragically lost their life during the recent violence associated with protests against foreign nationals in South Africa.

The group was welcomed by officials from @UgandaMFA led by @d_ogwang and Col. @ChrisOMagezi representing the CDF Gen. @mkainerugaba and the UPDF fraternity.

This afternoon, I had the honour of presenting a Ministerial Statement on the floor of Parliament regarding the ongoing evacuation and repatriation of Ugandan nationals from South Africa.

I updated the House on the Government’s coordinated efforts to ensure the safe return of our citizens, highlighting that as of 7th July 2026, a total of 880 Ugandans had been successfully repatriated, with another emergency evacuation flight carrying 250 Ugandans expected to arrive later today.

I reaffirmed Government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the welfare, dignity and safety of all Ugandans, wherever they may be. I also expressed my sincere appreciation to H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the @OPMUganda, the @MoWT_Uganda, the CDF, @mkainerugaba, @UgEmbassySA led by Ambassador @AmoruPaul, and all stakeholders whose tireless efforts have made this humanitarian exercise possible.

Together, we remain committed to ensuring that no Ugandan is left behind.

Today, I was honored to officiate the National Youth Council (NYC) National Executive Committee (NEC) orientation at @UNICEFUganda 📌

This is where we build that foundation, preparing leaders to champion our National Youth agenda at the highest levels of governance.

The theme was, “Strengthening Leadership, Policy Implementation and Advocacy for Adolescents and Youth,”

A strong Youth Council, is a very critical foundation of effective youth representation in Parliament.

Later in the day, I had the honor of joining H.E. the Vice President, Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, fellow Ministers, and senior government officials for a strategic engagement between the Central Government and the Buganda Kingdom.

The engagement reaffirmed the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and collaboration in strengthening the relationship between the Government of Uganda and our cherished cultural institutions. Such meaningful engagements continue to play a critical role in promoting national unity, preserving our rich cultural heritage, and advancing inclusive socio-economic transformation for the benefit of all Ugandans.

I commend H.E. the Vice President for her exemplary leadership, dedication, and commitment to fostering trust, harmony, and constructive partnerships between the Central Government and the Buganda Kingdom. Her efforts continue to demonstrate the power of dialogue and collective responsibility in addressing issues of national importance.

With today’s arrival of 166, the total number of Ugandan nationals successfully repatriated from 🇿🇦 under @GovUganda’s voluntary evacuation program has now risen to 730.

This comprises 266 on the first flight, 32 on the second, 266 on the third, and 166 on today’s fourth flight.

The first batch of Ugandan nationals evacuated from South Africa is expected to arrive at Entebbe International Airport tonight, 2nd July 2026, at 9:30pm aboard a special Uganda Airlines charter flight carrying 260 evacuees.

The evacuation follows a directive by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to safeguard the welfare and safety of Ugandans following recent anti-migrant violence and xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The repatriation exercise is being coordinated jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uganda, the Office of the Prime Minister of Uganda, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uganda, the Ministry of Works and Transport of Uganda, the Uganda High Commission in Pretoria, and leaders of the Ugandan community in South Africa.

Uganda Airlines is operating the special charter flights, fully funded by the Government of Uganda.

The Uganda High Commission in Pretoria continues to provide critical on-ground support, including registration of evacuees, establishment of safe assembly centres, and issuance of emergency travel documents where necessary to facilitate the smooth evacuation process.

According to Paul Amoru, additional repatriation flights have been arranged.

The second flight is scheduled to depart on Friday at 03:00hrs and arrive at 08:15hrs with 35 evacuees, while the third flight will depart at 13:00hrs and arrive at 19:00hrs carrying 114 Ugandan nationals.

The Government of Uganda remains in active engagement with South African authorities to ensure the continued safety and welfare of Ugandans who remain in the country.

H.E. Amb. @AmoruPaul has reaffirmed that all preparations are in place for the first repatriation flight of vulnerable Ugandan nationals from South Africa that is expected to depart tomorrow from O.R. Tambo International Airport.

The High Commission, working with the Governments of Uganda and South Africa, has established evacuation centres, deployed technical teams and completed clearance for the first group of returnees.

Earlier today, H.E. @AmoruPaul, Uganda’s High Commissioner to South Africa, was hosted on @nbstv to provide an update on the security situation affecting Ugandans in South Africa and the Government of Uganda’s coordinated response ahead of the planned anti-migrant demonstrations.

During the interview, the High Commissioner outlined the measures undertaken by the Uganda High Commission in Pretoria in collaboration with the Government of Uganda to safeguard Ugandan nationals, including the ongoing voluntary evacuation programme for vulnerable Ugandans wishing to return home.

He reassured Ugandans that the Government remains fully committed to their welfare, safety and security, and urged those affected to remain in close contact with the Uganda High Commission as registration and evacuation arrangements continue.

UPDATE: One Ugandan has been confirmed dead in the xenophobic unrest in South Africa. According to Uganda's Ambassador to South Africa, @AmoruPaul , reports indicate that Niwamanya Wilberforce was beaten to death yesterday in KwaZulu-Natal, and robbed of his motorcycle .
