We are pleased to announce the publication of our landmark article "Genetic Diversity of SARS-CoV-2 Infections in Ghana from 2020-2021", in Nature Communications, accessible @ https://t.co/nRXaKkjoia

Prof @gordon_awandare of @WACCBIP_UG explains how surveillance of drug resistance across Africa together with national malaria control programmes will slow the transmission of #malaria.
Prof @gordon_awandare of @WACCBIP_UG explains how Ghana applied its #genomic sequencing capacity to Covid, and it is now time to use it to track drug resistance in #Plasmodium and insectcide resistance in #anopheles mosquitoes.
How is no one talking about the fact that Ghana’s own @YemaachiBio, one of the few biotech startups on the continent, made into @ycombinator's sumer batch of 2021!?
They're the only Ghanaian and only biotech firm among the 15 African companies who will be pitching on Demo Day!
SARS-CoV-2 variant distribution over time in Ghana. as of July 2021, #Delta has taken over as the predominant variant in the country. View the @WACCBIP_UG@YemaachiBio interactive tracker at https://t.co/t6chNWLquD
Our data now suggest the inevitable has occurred, delta variant has taken over local transmission in Ghana. Remarkably, it appears the alpha variant was already being replaced by B.1.1.318 before delta arrived. Will be interesting to see how B.1.1.318 fares with delta.
Congratulations Professor Dorothy Yeboah-Manu on your appointment by the University Council as the first female Director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. She takes over from Professor Abraham Anang who retires from active service on 31st July 2021.
Delivering the final talk and sharing his work on characterization of the immune response to an improved malaria vaccine candidate (PfRh5.2) was @Jae_Suurbaar, a final year MPhil student.
The name "Yemaachi" comes from a combination of 3 different Ghanaian languages, and means "A New Dawn for Health in Africa". Here is a short video about us... https://t.co/d1jWEkSxvs
Our fellows session had @fredonearth give a presentation on "Genetic diversity and evolution of known Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance genes in Africa and Asia".#wrc2021@WACCBIP_UG

The Nobel Prize has been awarded to at least 6 discoveries related to malaria.
The latest was to Tu Youyou who discovered artemisinin, a substance which inhibits the malaria parasite. She tested the medicine on herself: it now saves countless lives every year.
#WorldMalariaDay
As we commemorate #WorldMalariaDay, we must remember that this is a preventable & treatable disease, that still kills 400,000+ people every year. Working together & supported with sustained funding, we can dare to dream of a malaria-free 🌍. #EndMalaria
