I recently wrote about why I think the FDE boom is a product gap.
On October 6, I’ll be at @ICONIQCapital's first Builders Circle in New York sharing lessons from building Palantir’s Forward Deployed AI Engineering function, and how that experience shapes the work we’re doing today at Edra.
We’ll talk about what it takes to build and scale the FDE model, what makes great FDEs, and how to turn what you learn in the field into product.
If you’re building an FDE team, already doing the job, or just curious about the model, come join us.

You seem to know a lot about this.
Here’s my recollection. We started it in the kitchen of a rented flat in Smithfield market. We funded it with credit cards and personal savings for several months.
Passion Capital did the first three rounds of investment alone because we pitched everyone else and they all said no.
There was no UK government money involved because of EU state aid prohibitions against governments supporting banks. Passion had to raise a separate SPV with no British govt money in order to invest in Monzo.
Miles at Thrive lead the 4th round of funding, and was a great partner throughout my time there.
It feels quite a lot like we started it from nothing.
@levelsio there are technical solutions for open development to not be scary, but it’s not in the interests of huge labs to use them, or even acknowledge they exist, if they can instead convince state-level actors to pull up the ladder behind them by doom-saying
100% true - this would be a big mistake. Right now is a critical moment for tech as an economic and national security issue. Tying up our most senior science and tech officials in a reorg wastes time and energy that’s desperately needed for the actual substance.
@chrispisarski Got you. Conceptually like it (and fan of crustdata as a source) but my guess is that the ones putting it on there will be more receptive to outreach RE another opportunity… not sure they’ll be the best people out there though?
